Question on Crocodile grain leather straps.

I've only had one, it was a black Hirsch Duke and I know it's not a real crocodile strap, it's merely embossed to look like one. I never found it to be all that comfortable, but my wife liked it so I put it on her watch. My question is are they always that ridged where they feel stiff on the wrist? I don't want to spend the money for real crocodile but I like the look. I have a Seiko Presage that came with a bracelet and I think a honey or brown crocodile look grain would look brilliant on it.

If there are softer options you could recommend that would be great, otherwise it may be that I need to get used to it to break it in.

I think the stiffness depends on the padding used for the strap. I had a cheap HMT strap which had the croc style texture but light padding and it was very soft and supple. I read somewhere that real crocodile leather strap is quite soft, but on the other hand, I once tried out an IWC at my AD and the croc strap (I'm guessing it was genuine croc leather) on that was quite stiff.

Genuine croc, especially if made by hand is not stiff. It will depend more on the maker and the backing leather used. I especially like honey color too ... and stamped straps have a difficult time replicating the finest genuine skins ...

Croco straps are almost never lined with croc so it depends on the lining. I'm sure you could get a custom with croc lining but I've never been offered croc as a lining. There are a lot of nice soft linings like Kangaroo that are very waterproof and soft on the skin. I also have Hirsch (Modena) and it is a little stiff. There are customs that you can get for around the same price coming from lower priced countries. Also you might want to try some other leathers if you like the texture and want soft and lower cost. Have you tried Teju lizard. I really like it and you can pick them up for under $45. Not sure if you can get in honey.

Softness/comfort as depends on the cut of the hide.

Good center cut croc or alligator is very comfy on the wrist.

I might have to go with a real croc then. I was thinking of a Hirsch Grand Duke over the standard Duke but we'll see. With the heat right now my watch will be staying on the bracelet for the time being.

There is nothing about embossed croc/gator that should make it inherently stiff. It's possible the Hirsh strap was just thick or otherwise designed in a way that made it stiff.

That's most likely the case. I've bought a number of leather straps, but that one was the only embossed one I've owned and all other straps I've owned have been noticeably more flexible.
