    Thickness of the waxed thread?

    Hi everyone,

Sorry if that has been posted before, but I really tried searching and couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I am thinking of trying my hand at strap making and have started to order the tools online. I've managed to find most of the things I require, but am a little unsure of the thickness of the waxed thread used. I'm looking to work on mostly 20-24mm straps and can't figure out what the thickness of there thread should be. I found an old post where someone suggested a 4 or 5 ply thread, but the place where I'm looking to buy from has the thickness mentioned in millimetres, like .6mm or 1mm.

Could someone here please enlighten me on what to go for?

    Thanks!

I use 4 ply waxed linen thread for my straps, and it usually is listed at 0.7-0.8mm. For some waxed polyester thread I use that is about the same thickness it is listed as 0.030" or inch. This is for G10 style nato or zulu straps so the leather is not incredibly thick. If making thick leather straps you could consider thicker thread. I hope this helps!

I bought prewaxed thread initially from Tandy Leather. It was just too large and stiff for my liking. Then my lovely wife suggested I wax my own. She gave me a round of bee's wax she had in her sewing box and I started using the thread we used when sewing the canvas on our sail boat. I will check the size of that, but I can tell you that it is much more enjoyable now. I determine the amount of waxing and that has made all of the difference in my strap attempts. I am presently wearing attempt #3, perhaps by attempt 5 or 6 I will have a design I am comfortable with sharing with WUS for comment.

Unfortunately there aren't too many options online here, unless you know where to source stuff from. For the time being, I've ordered for a .6mm waxed roll. Maybe if that doesn't work out, I will try waxing threads myself.
