Last question first, the only company I know that produces Harris tweed straps is Birline, and they're asking a bit over $50. I like the notion, but I'd also be worried about durability, so even $40 seems like it'd be pushing the limit.

Strap type...NATO, never. Not with the keeper hardware, not with the short strap. RAF style...maybe, but I'm not at all sure even fabric keepers would look good. I'm trying to envision a leather/tweed combination, but not sure it would work.

And even an RAF-style single-pass might have the issue of riding too high...this would almost certainly be the case with a NATO's understrap.

So classic. With quick-change spring bars.

I might also add that even with a leather layer for structural support and to keep the wool off the skin...the sides of the strap on the Birline are a tad itchy.

i agree with u. i would like to install quick release spring bar as well but not sure if it will fray easily. as for the wool coming into contact with the skin, i think that's a tough nut to crack. leather keeper might work but if we have that many colours for tweed it would be a nightmare to match.

Steveo straps in the UK makes quality Harris Tweed straps for around £39 in real money!

Classic. I don't think a tweed nato would work at all. It sounds like you are discussing a construction similar to the ones I had made out of European felted wool (not the Chinese polyester stuff). All backed with leather and comfy, not itchy at all. You can see the way they are constructed with a single piece of leather that goes from the back to the front of the strap at each end. Makes the springbar attachment easy and precise. Made by Dustin at N80 Leather.

Felted wool would probably be better. The Birline strap has a leather backing, but it's much lighter...which IMO is a good thing.

But Harris looks a heck of a lot nicer than that felted, I have to say. Still, on the up side, I was also thinking more of a combination fabric/leather along similar lines to those, at least when a good fabric/leather color combo works out. Honey/tan leather would work with quite a few colors.

BTW, my Birline strap uses matching tweed keepers, not leather.
