Your type of Leather ... Are you a leatherman?

Hi... have you made your own custom strap before? or are you a strap maker? if not, perhaps is there a leather that you have taken a liking to?

Perhaps share with us what leather grades are there? and what are the better quality ones for watch strap making?

    thanks all!

There is a pretty good list of strap makers in this subforum. I think that a question like what leather is best is subjective. Some people like the 200 year old Metta Catherina, other people like new top grain. Some people like Italian, others like ammo leather. I would take a look at the links of the different strap makers, see what you like and then ask for opinions of specific ones. My guess is that if it is on the list, you will like it. Variety is the spice of life.

Its pretty much a trial and error thing, kind of like cars you drive many but eventually you will find what you really like if your lucky, unless you settle with a Yugo.

I really like baseball glove leather. Looks good, wears well, it's comfortable, extremely soft and ,if you are a baseball freak like me, it smells like heaven surely must.

Baseball is really nice leather, soft and tough, plus it has some great character, especially when you use real mitts.
