So I always read that the 6 digit subs only look bigger due to fatter lugs. But the face always looked bigger to me regardless. I decided to Photoshop the case away, from a photo of both watches being photographed at the same height side by side and the 6 digit sub still seems quite a bit bigger. The bezel seems 1-2mm bigger which I think is where the added size comes from. However they both seem to officially be measured at 40mm.
The dial and bezel are the same size. So too is the bracelet.
The difference between the two generations of Submariners is in the size of the case. The 6-digit is wider, chunkier, and has substantially thicker lugs (the four pieces that stick out from the case and attach to the bracelet). The section from the crown guards down through the lugs has a lot more metal and thus makes the entire watch seem far larger.
one aspect not pointed out is the 114060 no date Submariner and the 116610 date Submariner both share the same case. However, the 14060M and 16610 do not share the same case as the 14060M case is thinner than the 16610 case. At one time I owned a 14060M that I now wish I had kept.
I found the 114060 to wear like a 42mm and be a bit too chunky for me, but it's a great watch, no doubt. Visually I think the 6 digit sub appears significantly larger than the 5 digit sub.
Yes. Wish they had not detracted from their original perfect case size and ideal lug size.
I guess the advantage of a maxi case is that you can polish it to death, and in 50 years it'll look great, a new 5 digit out of an old 6 digit
But the face always looked bigger to me regardless.

?
Thanks! That's awesome. So we can now definitively say that case and lugs aside, the face surface area between the 5 sand 6 digit models differ by .7mm in size.
