Did Rolex ever offer a DJ with a fully brushed oyster bracelet?
I saw a DJ36 with fluted bezel but a fully brushed bracelet last week. Despite what I would have guessed, it looked quite good. I wasn't sure if this was a standard offering at some point in the past or something the owner did intentionally.
Yes, from the 1950's through the 1990's one could get a Datejust on a brushed Oyster bracelet if they wished. Back then, Rolex also brushed the top of the case so it matched quite nicely.
Modern DJ's have polished cases and so they would look awkward against a fully brushed Oyster bracelet.
This is exactly why I tink the OP line up is the best classic they make. Simple dials, brushed bracelets and top surfaces. The 39 black face is one I keep looking at. The DJ's have followed the 'more bling required' formula with polished everything which is the current fashion but also shows up dents and scratches more. I'd like to see a blue face, brushed oyster, fluted bezel DJ41 with brushed uppers to match. That would definately be on my wish list.
They did; I have one. It's old, though, very old. Some say the DJ belongs on a Jubilee bracelet, and it does look more jangly-jewellery-like on a Jubilee, but back then, the Jubilee bracelets were no better than crap. The old Oysters resisted stretch for a long time.
On a new DJ, with all hi-baller polish and glinting, I'd take the Jubilee every time.
