Watches are a weird thing....
I've been aware of the Daytona for 40 some years but never had the desire to get one having no use for a Chrono and its extra knobs protruding from the case.
I've seen a lot of examples through the years and have passed on many my AD offered me in the past several years.
For some reason, the profile of the case really hit me in the past few months so I bought the white-dial version from my AD.
Being a bit OCD, and wanting to own a set of these (pair) I'm considering adding the black-dial as well.
Who knows if I'll wear a Daytona much, but I can always give them to my twin daughters this side or the other.
QUESTION: Do you have strong feelings on one color versus the other; or maybe a pair might be cool to own?
PS: Still haven't lost my lust for the white-gold Day-Date-40, and this delays that move I guess.
The White Daytona looks small and delicate because the black bezel constrains the dial whereas the Black Daytona looks large and powerful because the black bezel expands the dial.
30 seconds with each on your wrist tells the story. I went to buy the White but my dealer showed me the Black at the same time and it was lights out, went Black right then and there without question or struggle. It was an easy decision.
I honestly cannot choose from the pics, I am leaning towards the white but really need to see both in the flesh side by side and on wrist to make a choice...
I already bought the white one.
Seeing the pictures here from Sportura and others, and also the black & white paired together in the same picture make me obsess on the black one as well.
I'd personally go for the white, as all my watches have Black dials. In all fairness, you can't go 'wrong' with either.
Getting hold of one, is where your 'problems' start. ;-)
Well that did not take long! It is a nice pair and I would say go for it.
I was not impressed by the white dial version on my wrist.
I do prefer the black version and even the black dial two-tone version, so I would favor the purchase. Even taking into account the desire for the DD
I have ran both, but I ended up keeping a white dial. The contrasting dial is much more legible. It's a classic, and just pops more than the black dial. Also it seems like most watches have black dials, and the white helped balance my collection.
I don't know if it's worth adding, but strangely I have received more compliments on the white dial Daytona, than any of my other Rolex watches.
Black bezel and black dial looking big and dominant on my 7.2" wrist.
Nothing wrong with a White dial, but Rolex and Black dials go together like peanut butter and jelly, just made for each other. Doesn't make much sense to stray from this classic color configuration on the best Rolex ever made. OP's and DJ's are the place to dabble with fashion dials.
I don’t own a Daytona, and don’t plan to, but if I were to buy one it would most certainly be the panda dial, which really looks sharp. The contrast between the black ceramic bezel, the white dial and the black/white subdials is a killer.
I only have the white dial version, but considering adding black to make a pair....
I finally bought one this summer after passing on many over the past few years.......hard to resist case profile.
Plus my kid told me to....haha...
Assuming I could get both a retail (LOL), I'd flip the black dial immediately and keep the white dial forever. Black dial is a little too boring for me and there are loads of good black dial watches out there.
Let's be honest here, they are difficult to read and most only want them because they a/ can tell people they have one or b/ flip and make profit if they can buy right. Yes there are true fans but not many.
They are not even difficult to get hold of these days unlike the older no crown guard variety or the pre ceramics which were truly scarce. Sportura is right and the white dial does look small, even the pre ceramic white dial looked very small when I tried it. I think the main problem is the 2 tone sub dials and the hand shape. If the hands were a flatter cut it would help.
If it looked like this I'd be more interested,
I think they both are nice, but prefer the contrast of the white dial myself. I do think it's a little silly to own both. There are so many great watches out there, to have both just for the color seems like a waste when that could be spent on something entirely different. But that's just me.
