I thought Daytonas were always desirable and hard to get.

Back in the 90s I don’t ever recall seeing them in the cases, either. There were always Sub, GMTs and everything else. I was all about the Datejusts in those days.

Not too long ago I can remember seeing an auction listing from one of the big houses (Sothebyís, etc.) that had a Daytona will full provenance. It carried a serial from 1972, and was accompanied with an Invoice from the AD as being sold new in 1978!!! It took 6 years to move that sucker... unthinkable now but thatís why some of these pieces today arenas rare as they are.

Legend tells it that Daytona were such poor sellers in the 1970's through the 1980's, that ADs used to give away the Daytona with purchase of another Rolex, or sell them for $200. These are now known as the Paul Newman Daytonas. Crazy huh?

Iím not sure how early things got crazy. My awareness goes back to the late 90s when I first got into watches and at that time they were $5500 and the local AD was asking $10k

It's amazing what a handful of watch blogs can do to tell people what they want!

    Yep this!

Daytona's didn't become desirable till the 90s (or perhaps in the late 80s). I still don't know what caused the rise to fame though

I know it started with the Italians... probably because they admired the aesthetic or (just guessing) perhaps they were associating it with one of their own celebrities???
