    Rolex Submariner 1680 1969

Hi, I have purchased a Rolex Submariner 1680 1969. I got it for a very good price, around $5500USD.

My watch maker has it at the moment. He has confirmed the watch was only ever serviced by Rolex themselves, based on the marks inside the case back. It was serviced in 1974, 1996 and lastly in 2002.

Between 2002 and now unfortunately it appears to have fallen into the wrong hands and has been quite messed about with.

I was aware at the point of purchase that this piece had a replica dial, handset and bezel insert. I am pretty sure the date wheel is not correct, however this isnt a massive priority as it has a Rolex service date wheel in it at the moment. I dont mind if the parts arent from 1969, I only wish to have this back to a wearable state with Rolex OEM parts.

I am trying to source original, authentic Rolex parts for this watch. I know it had a service in 1974, so I am happy to settle for service parts, white dials etc from the mid 1970's.

I am also looking for a 69ii bracelet.

    Thanks everyone,
    Cheers

Around $4k for dial, hands and bezel insert (assuming a nice period correct set). Bracelet going to add another $1500 so that’s potentially the same as you paid for the watch. Plus a new tropic crystal will add to that. But that total comes in under what a nice 1680 could be worth, so it is doable. Best of luck.

Bringing that watch back sounds like a fun project. I wonder if a massive service at a RSC would be worth it.

Thanks. I have a red luminova nos service dial, luminova handset and a new 1680 service replacement bezel insert. Also picked up a 127 top hat. Those parts in total set me back $4000USD. So in total so far I am into this for $9500USD.

I decided to go down the modern service route, as I dont think I could every find a meters first red dial. The parts are on their way and I will have my watchmaker work on this shortly.

I will upload some more pictures when its done.

Below is a 'before' picture and roughly what I think is most achievable with this watch, a fully restored 1680 in the right photo using all modern service parts.

Me personally, I would keep that dial and hand set in it. I like that way it looks

All the best in the restoration....personally I think it looks great as is, new crystal and bracelet rejuvenation and I would be all set.

If it's already got the correct bracelet on then I remember seeing some frankly astounding refurbishments on the Rolex forums. Stateside, that was.

I wouldn’t have replaced that Tiffany dial.

Except that dial and hands are aftermarket. So they’re worthless if left as is.
