I tend to agree about not selling a newer model ROlex to acquire a vintage piece...unless you have a couple of watches in rotation. I have a 16800 from the 80's, and when I was using it lightly in rotation it was not a problem. Once I decided to use it as my daily wear watch it started to "act up" a bit. I personally don't think older (any brand) watches are going to be as reliable as a daily wearer as a newer model. I also agree YMMV.
I think you would be sick to your stomach with panic and regret the next morning if you did so.
I own both. Once you own a Sub it becomes very hard to wear an Explorer as they are essentially the same watch with the Explorer comparatively having no wrist presence. Trade those Lange/Moser/Jaeger/Panerai's for the Explorer and then keep both the Rolexes. Then you have the daily option to go powerful or go understated. Limiting yourself to only the understated is a recipe for disaster.
The Explorer looks excellent on your wrist. I assume selling your 114060 would create a surplus which could go to something else. I believe this would be one of your first pre-owened pieces, correct?
I have purchased preowned and even vintage Watches previously but my preference has always been towards brand new.
I do intend to sell my Moser and Panerai but definitely not my Lange.
I have not worn my Rolex Submariner for a number of months now. Seems like a waste to keep it but I know that I won’t lose money on it if I don’t sell it.
For daily wear it’s hard to argue against the reliability and connivence / time keeping of the modern Rolex..... but for occasional wear the classic case shapes / vintage subs and explorer will always get my vote.
With your wrist size the 36mm Explorer seems perfect. IMO.
The Explorer looks quite at home on your wrist Dan.
Selling the Submariner makes sense if you have not worn it in a while but I think you would miss it. The Explorer is lighter, much more comfortable to wear daily on a smaller wrist and has less wrist presence which is what I love. I wear mine when I want to be low-key but still want to see a Rolex face when I check the time.
Although the Sub and Explorer are both black dial sports watches there is room for both in the collection in my opinion.
I'll have to agree on Sportura on keeping the Sub. The Explorer is a great all-purpose one watch, but quickly becomes redundant as your number of watches go up. Your 1815/Moser/Reverso covers the dressy base nicely and the Sub/Pam covers the sports watch. Speaking from personal experience, you may find the Explorer a jack of all trades, being not dressy or sporty enough.
I have a 114270 which I love deeply. It has been with me for 3 years now and not planning on getting rid of it soon. I am not a huge fan of the sub, but definitely would like to own one. I more into the GMT and the Explorer II. If you haven't worn it for a few months, and don't miss it, sell it and move on, they're not going to be too rare to acquire again... And probably you're not going to if you hadn't worn it for so long. I have the 114270 like I said, but would buy a 14270 Tritium dial in a heart bit. Good luck!
I ended up not purchasing the Rolex Explorer 14270, even though it was beautiful!
