I'm kind of agonizing over a potential trade here. I have the BB58, bought on fabric & sourced the bracelet afterwards and I've been offered a straight swap for an OP36 with blue 3,6,9 dial from an established member here with lots of positive feedback. I love the sunburst blue dial on it, but I'm just curious of opinions purely from a value perspective? Any feedback appreciated!
People seem to obsess over value. A classic Rolex will always be a Rolex and so will probably retain value better, but then the BB58 seems to be a hot watch these days.
These two are such different watches I think you need to first decide what type of watch you prefer.
Haha I'd love to have both but that's not in the cards for me right now! I'm thinking the OP would be more versatile for a one watch collection, though I'm sure some would disagree. Luckily, the local AD actually has the blue dial OP36 in the store today so I'll be able to try it on shortly!
I have similar sized wrists and love love my 36mm explorer. That being said, I think the BB58 is an amazing watch and THE Sub-style watch for those of us that want modern Sub in a smaller package. I think the looks are killer and seemingly great movement. They aren't that easy to get, either which is good for resale right now.
The Rolex is a Rolex, but it isn't "rare" as an OP, tho the dial config is sublime like my Explorer.
Obviously try them both on and see, but I think you might be going for the Rolex because it's a Rolex and the 36mm feels amazing.
Agree with others, get the OP.
Though one thought I have is how old it is? As earlier models had thin hands which really affects the legibility. Also condition, plus box and papers would be a concern as well.
Still a good trade though.
One thing someone mentioned that you should consider is that a blue dial will always be less versatile than a black one. But then if you’re into blue dials that’s a non issue.
Value wise you are good to go.
Size seems good. Looks great.
I sold my BB58 and tracked down an OP39 black. No regrets. I think you'll feel the same.
Good luck, and let us know how it goes!
After digging a little more, the OP does have the slimmer hands and a 7-digit serial that dates it to ~2008. I actually prefer the slimmer hands, just not sure I want to trade my 6 week old watch for a 10+ year old watch
This is so tough. Honestly between op black I’m going Rolex but 36 blue is not my thing. So by that rational if it in fact your cup of tea then I am not mad at the trade. As it stands the 58 is hands down my favorite modern Tudor and top 5 of all time. OP is not close to any top Rolex list. By that rational, I wouldn’t make that trade. Rolex retains better value historically. By that rational, Rolex is the better bet.
All around it is very personal decision. I love my BB, but will admit I contemplate trades all the time. I have yet to find a watch that comes close to checking as many boxes as the 58.
If I was you I wouldn’t, but again I’d respect that trade!
Two different watches it's down to your personal preference with that being said i would never pass on a chance to get a Rolex it's a plus vote for Rolex good luck with your choice again you can't go wrong.
Given the age difference in the watches, I'd be more comfortable with the Tudor... the blue dial OP is beautiful, but if you want the 3 6 9 dial layout, the original Explorer is the one to get.
It's a positive trade. Do it and get another 58 later if you miss.
