what do *you* do when you get a used rolex?

i've had to face this twice now. both times, after a short period of wearing it, i took it to RSC for authentication/registration and get a service quote. and both times i've done the service (i have a Sub there now).

i like the security of knowing:

    - the watch is genuine
    - it was never reported stolen
    - i can wear it in a known condition
    - it's officially registered to me

does anyone else do something similar?

    I wear it.

When I’m next near my independent, or there’s something wrong, I call in and get it opened to get their opinion regarding timeframe for the next service.

I insure it and start wearing it. Send it to service when it starts to run bad. Like +10 seconds bad.

I never do. I only buy new. This provides me with total peace of mind.

I only buy new, but on occasion I help others on the second hand market.

Common sense and due diligence suggest that right away -

timegrapher to check the health of the movement (beat error)
case back off inspect for oxidation / corrosion around seals
    re-grease seals, close up
    pressure test

At point of sale, you should still check the alignment of the hands at 12 and 6, the date function dead on midnight (or +/- whatever your own tolerance is).

I've come across a new Rolex with the minute hand 8 minutes ahead of the hour hand, and a date change at 10 past midnight.

I could live with the latter, but the former - no way.

I agree with you here. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' way to purchase a watch. It's down to personal opinion/taste/finances.
I always prefer to buy new. Suits me that way.
I could stop buying watches, but I'm no quitter.

Makes it really difficult though when the model you’re after is no longer produced.......5513, 1665, 1680, etc
    Best Regards,
