I for one never considered YM2 as a true Rolex; there is something that I profoundly dislike about this watch; in fact, there isn't a single Rolex that I wouldn't wear, except this one.
The thing is this, these questions asking are they any good? do the suck? are question 'we' can't answer.
Let me explain, Rolex make, in my opinion, some real shockers. I mean seriously ugly/hideous/grotesque watches.
Now, this won't surprise you, but some people actually like them. So are they are good/do they suck?
I quite like the Yacht Master II, so to me, they don't suck. The next person to post, may feel they do! ;-)
I don't think that the YM II is really interesting for peopple in this forum, at least not as much a the Daytona, Explorer, GMT Master, or Submariner. This is mainly because those have a nice second hand market and people here generally like to try a lot of different watches and talk with other who have similar interests.
The YM II can be seen however in Monaco or Saint Tropez and places like that where people just walk into a boutique and buy something that looks good. They don't care about the resale and a 15k miss is not a big deal. They don't have to open up a thread about help me decide how to spend 15k on a watch. I know there are lots of members of this forum who have no problem giving out 15k I just think they are watch hobbyists and not just rich people who have an expensive watch.
The YM II is a great looking watch. I know exactly 3 people in my circle who have that watch and truth be told it looks awesome. It looks bold and definitely stands out. One of the guys has the watch on a blue RubberB strap with the Rolex clasp and it looks the bomb.
I don’t have the wrist to pull off a 44mm watch with a 50mm lug to lug but if the watch would have been any smaller, it would have been in my collection. Also, Rolex makes very few white dial watches and perhaps only one with a blue bezel.. you know what I am talking about.
That said, right now they are selling for a bargain in the secondary market. They regularly sell for around 15-16% discount. Folks are so focused on Sub, GMT and Daytona that these watches go unnoticed but when you see them in person.. you will be like.. this is one hell of a watch.
If you are thinking about it, I would recommend Go for it.
It's an awkward watch. It's more of a Datejust than a Submariner. It's tainted as it's easy to find and it's discounted. It's one of the rare watches that's really only suitable to be worn by its namesake.
No YM for me. I won't have the time to stand still long enough to set the bezel and set the count down timer. Would have been thrown overboard by then :-d
I think the YM II looks really good! Didn't know they were not as popular, let alone discounted.
