    Are price increases inevitable?

Hiya gang - when I purchased my GMT earlier this summer, the local salesguy, a master watchmaker himself, expressed his opinion that the Ball watches were underpriced. He felt like the market could bear an increase this year and then again next spring.

What do you guys think? Are their price points competitive? Too low? Too high?

I'm relatively inexperienced at watches - although, I have owned three Rolexes in the past. Trust me, owning a Rolex doesn't make you an expert. But, my own gut feeling is that the Ball Hydrocarbon GMT is a much better watch that the Rolex's I owned. I know the GMT keeps better time in fact than the GMT II I sold last year. Maybe it was time for a $400 service for it... dunno....sold it after a particular incident that I documented here.

I've very much a value shopper these days - much more than before obviously - the Ball fit my comfort level to a T.

I would have probably paid a bit more for it.

    /code of silence off/

What do you much more knowledgeable folks think?
    Cheers,
    Gerry

I think Ball is one of the best kept secrets. It's only a matter of time before it gets discovered by more people who will realize that this is just as good as other famous name brands. Value for money, you can't go wrong with Ball. As for a possible price increase, it really depends on how they want to position themselves in the market.

I think prices will go up eventually. I also think the name might catch on pretty soon. Thats why we should get in on it now! I always tell everyone about ball.

We've seen it with Doxa, Bathys and some other brands...

    Re: Are price increases inevitable?

When I bought my EMII Classic in early March this past year, the sales guy told me that Ball was making relatively small price increases, pretty much every year...and was pretty sure that Ball was planning on continuing to do so.

I definitely agree that Ball is one of the truly undervalued gems in our watch world. Imho, quality-wise and performance-wise, Ball watches can easily go toe-to-toe with other brand watches costing considerably more than their price range. If pressed, I'd also have to agree that Ball watches would be within reason to stand another price increase.

But I hope that Ball plans, for the most part, to stay in their current general price range...so that they'll continue to be(relatively) more affordable to the buying public...and continue to be known in the industry for their outstanding quality and value.

Btw, my EMII Classic absolutely kicks butt on my Rolex, too!
    Take care,
    Geoff

    Re: Are price increases inevitable?

Ball certainly represents a lot of bang for the buck, but as to whether or not they're underpriced, that's for the market to decide. Frankly, I feel that my EHC GMT represents an excellent value at its current price point (moreso, when the AD discount I received is taken into account), but I'm not sure I'd still feel that way if I paid more than I did. True, the casework and finishing are beyond reproach, but before I start comparing it to a Rolex GMT, there are a couple of things I'd like to see, first and foremost among these being a "true" GMT function (quickset 12-hr hand), followed by more highly modified movements across the board. Naturally, the ultimate goal here would be the creation of an in-house movement, though I understand if that may not be feasible at this juncture. Still, how reasonable are my first two requests? I dunno, but given Ball's breakout success in Asia, and judging from the rate at which they're churning out new models, I would say that they're doing well enough to at the very least start considering these measures.

At any rate, what I do know is that I'm quite comfortable with where they're currently positioned (or rather, I should say that my wallet is). If they are going to raise their prices, all I ask is that they hold off until an Engineer Master II Diver Chrono is safely strapped to my wrist. After that, sky's the limit!

    Regards,
    Adam

I think Geoff hit the nail on the head. Ball's reputation is growing for a few reasons, not the least of which is its value. Raise the price too high, too quickly, and the value part of the equation goes out the window.

Good comments re the true GMT. I'd like to see that also - in fact, a true GMT would allow me to buy another Ball.

    (don't tell the wife though)

Keep in mind the good folks at Ball watch Forums such as this so the proper response is:
    "Hell no, not another dime!"

I'd like to hear more about how EMII Classic kicks butt on Rolex...I am only asking this because I want to know more about how good Ball really is and not because I have anything against Rolex
