556 for me better water resistance and the brushed case means it can be dressy if you need it to be, you can also have fun showing the movement to friends who like that kind of thing and don't yawn and its cheaper

a 656 but just because I've always wanted one
(that doesn't mean I would pass up a 556 if a deal came up)

556 for me. I like the marked, no numeral dial and the fact that the watch can be dressed up or down. And, it's cheaper!

I'm looking for one to go along with my 856 right now.

556 gets my vote. the finish on the dial just makes it look that little bit sharper. cant go wrong either way though!

    Re: 556 or 656

I went back and forth on this recently before ultimately deciding that the 656 was more what I was looking for. I wanted an easy to read mechanical watch that I would not have to take off, ever really unless I wanted to. The 556 was actually too dressy for my purpose. I really prefer the dial on the 656 being less shiny and the difference in depth rating is, by my estimate, inconsequential unless you plan to do much more than surface dive with this watch. Ultimately I suppose it depends on your plan for the watch. I never take mine off (ok, I do not wear it when I am chopping wood) as it is the only watch I currently own and I find it classic enough for daily wear and I have not yet encountered a situation that it had been too casual for. The magnetic rating is also a plus and I actual prefer the lack of an exhibition caseback so a double bonus there.

As so many have said before, "buy what you like," and I will add "wear it."

Thumbs Up Re: 556 or 656

    I vote 656, it's a classic!

    Re: 556 or 656

To me, the 556 looks much dressier since it has a satin finish and a very simple, beautiful face design. The date window seems bigger on the 556 than on the 656 in the images and appears easier to read, too. This is what differentiates it from the 856 and the 656.

Is there A/R coating on the inside/outside of the crystal on both the 556 and the 656?

To compare either watch to the tegimented 856 in terms of case and bracelet scratch resistance/cosmetic durability would not be fair. Since it is common knowledge that lume on the x56 models is not robust, then that should come as no surprise.

Tough choice, but since I have an 856, the 556 would get wrist time because the 656 looks too much like the 856.

In fact, you are giving me ideas now and I am starting to convince myself into another eventual purchase...???

The 656 - classic looks, and a solid back.
