    Question 656S vs. 856S - hard time deciding ...

    Greetings fellow Sinners!

    I'm thinking of getting either a black 656 or 856. I already have a 657.
So I am more drawn to the 656 because of it's smaller size/height. However, the 856 has some additional goodies (tegiment, copper sulfate capsule, better water resistance). BUT it is bigger, and I really don't have that much use for a 2nd time zone. I read that the UTC hand can be (ab)used to determine north, but that would be a rather poor justification in front of myself to buy it.

Does the 656 have double AR coating, or just on the inside only? And can anyone comment on how durable the PVD of the 656 really is? I once owned a PVD Sinn, and it gained some "patina" over the years.

*sigh* hard decision. A Damasko DA36 might be interesting, however, it is even bigger than the 856.

Can't answer most of this, but worth noting that I don't think the 656S is PVD coated, I think it is galvanized instead. The 856 and the Damasko DA36 are both 40mm as far as I know, so no real size difference. I have a 656 and a DA36 and the size difference between the two is not as noticeable as you might think (both lovely watches!).

    Exactly, Dave.

The 656 is chromed, and the 856 is PVD ... if you want a black watch, the 856's coating will prove much more durable.

Thanks for the info. I'm a bit undecided. Maybe I should wait until some re-releases of former Sinn models.

Strangely, with the Sinn 656/856, the Damasko DA 36 (and possibly all-lumed 37 ), the IWC Mark XV and XVI there is almost a "glut" of full-fledged aviation watches with all the bells and whistles ... no easy decision. B-)
