    Sinn U2 Crystal Scratched

I was just admiring my Sinn U2 when I noticed uder a loupe that the crystal has a few hairline scratches. I really dont want to replace a crystal on a six month old watch. What can be done other than saying that this can happen with watches that have an AR coating on both sides. Any thoughts or should I just ignore it and have it taken care of when I get it serviced in 5-10 years. Who knows, I could be dead by then, and wont br worrying about a scratched crystal. What would you do? Thanks Stephen

Exactly the attitude to take. All watches will wear as you wear them. Dings, scratches ... all part of the experience. Just smile and go do something enjoyable. --redstart

    hi watchsk,

I'm afraid I can't give you a proper advise what you should do. What I would do is, to take a visit at the watchdealer you purchased the item and ask him for some amiability, because I definitely would be very angry when this happens to a just six month old watch, especially a (relative) expensive one...

besides that, I wonder when the watch manufacturers stop making those stupid double side AR coating O|. the benefits an upper side AR coating offers is minimal in comparison to the anger and annoyance you will probably have with a scratched crystal coating....

    regards, holger

I don't get it? You are blaming the dealer for scratches that the watch owner applied to said watch?

    Hi,

thats the opposite of my opinion.

I'm so happy about it, for me it is a "must have". And the benefit - 1800 Vickers hardness - is the summit of it. No other watch around the world has it .

    SINN U-serie: The best ever.

    cheers

that's why i don't look at my watches too closely

cause even if you can't see it, you KNOW its there :-D

but watches are meant to be worn, and you should wear it proudly

no, I am blaming Sinn for doing something unnecessary. if there wouldn't be AR coating, there wouldn't be scratches on the crystal. but since stephen is probably not living near Frankfurt/germany, the watch dealer has to take care of the mess. thats at least the way how we handle things over here.

    Re: Sinn U2 Crystal Scratched

It is common knowledge that nothing except diamonds is harder than sapphire. That being said, any super hard anti-reflective coating cannot equal or exceed the hardness of sapphire.

The super hard ar coating is 1800HV. This is indeed very, very hard. But...any perspective buyer must understand that a coating on a sapphire crystal will increase the chances of scratching. The buyer must then decide if the ar coating is more important than the scratchability of the applied ar coating. If the buyer is worried about the increased risk of scratches, as any ar coating is not as hard as the sapphire, then the buyer might want to think about another watch.

That being said, very tine hairline scratches are part of the bargain when you wear your watch. Since your asking me what I would do, I would consider this a super tough diver's watch which is built to SURVIVE introductions to adverse conditions. It may come out with a few tiny scratches, much less than other watches but it may pick up a few hairlines, but it's built to survive and I would consider tiny hairline scratches as battle scars and evidence of living a life without safeties on. Then again, I'm not a normal guy. I would be absolutely proud to present my U2 full of scratches and dents after a few years and say "I've been to a lot of insane places and done a lot of insane things and this baby has been with me every bit of the way!!"

I would think about having the crystal changed when it comes due for servicing, or inquire as to possibilites of fixing it.

If you want to change or fix it now, I wouldn't be able to help you with information on that as I have not been down that road.

    Hope this helps.

    Tim
