    SINNing on Canada Day

What better way to mark Canada Day July 1st than to canoe? We just returned from a road trip to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and on the way stopped to dip a paddle in Pine Lake at Wood Buffalo National Park, the largest park in Canada and home to the last free-roaming herd of wood bison.

Many just fly up to Yellowknife but we prefer to walk the land so driving suits best, with frequent stops to camp and explore. We stopped by a dinosaur dig to admire their work excavating a duckbilled Edmontosaurus still with skin texture...

We started north at Mile 0 of the Mackenzie Highway. Originally a wagon trail, then a winter-only ice road, today its a modern paved highway for most of the way to Yellowknife. But exploring near our campsite one evening we came across the old gravel roadbed from the 1940s. Now an ATV trail shared with the wildlife, as this bear print testified...

The Old Town of Yellowknife was founded on a gold vein and attracted many wild characters. I'm told it hasn't changed much except now diamonds excite the lust for wealth. Here some defiant house boats avoid paying property taxes to the city.

We were especially pleased to visit a couple of dockside eateries that were popular with bush pilots from the 1930s onwards...

The unmistakable sound of their rotary-engined C-46 greeted our arrival to town and triggered a thought...a quick call and we had a hangar tour arranged. That DC-3 cockpit was amazing if you have a dial fetish...

Hey, its a pleasure to share with another fan. I scored this DC-3 "speedometer" (air speed indicator) as a souvenir.
