    U1 crystal replacement question

My U1 has a very small scratch on the crystal -- very, very small, but it really bothers me. I contacted RGM (Sinn's authorized US repair center) for a repair quote. They told me that the watch had to go to Germany for a replacement crystal, and the price would be $245 plus $40 shipping. That sounds like a lot for a new crystal (hell, I think that's about what Rolex charges for a new crystal!). Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I can give you a suggestion:

A U1 owner from a german forum has changed (without scratching) the saphire glas from the U1 again the domed version from the U2. He like it. This can only be done at the Sinn factory in Frankfort, Germany. And - this is for you a surprise - the costs are only Euro 59 (~ 72,50 US$)

And the change again the original U1 glass must be cheaper, of course.

    cheers

I thought Stoll & Co. is Sinn's authorized US repair center. :-S

if the scratch is REALLY very small...check with the watchmakers in your area is they have diamond paste. i heard that used with buff pads, small scratches on sapphire crystals can be 'removed'.

    good luck / g

Very interesting information Mike! Thanks for posting this. This goes against everything that watchbuys had told us.

Has anyone here sent their Sinns to Stoll & Co. for servicing or repairs. Anything to report along this front guys?

Maybe Stoll and Co. is Watchbuys's, not Sinn's authorized repair center? :-S

    Re: U1 crystal replacement question

In correspondence with the watchbuys reps, they said that Stoll is the N.A. authorized service and repair facility for Sinn watches. This is a contractual thing apparently and Stoll is the present s&r company. The contract is for a finite time and then it comes up for tender again. That's what I was told, but you could be right Martin.

You can't always trust what a AD will say as being totally factual. It may or may not be misrepresentation designed to ease potential customers who are worried about servicing.

    Interesting stuff this.

There's a thread at the "other place" about removing a scratch from a sapphire with diamond paste and your finger.

(look under Classic Posts at "the other place")
