    UX question

    Hi all,
Longtime lurker, interested in the U series . Very cool stuff. My question is what is the depth rating on the new UX? The Watchbuys website lists it as waterproof to the european standard, but I don't know what that is. Thanks for any help. Great forum. Also, what happens with the oil when the battery is changed? I assume it is sealed and the battery contacts through metal but I have no experience with oil filled watches. One more, are the other hydros from Sinn quartz? or is it possible to have oil filled auto? New to watch construction as you can tell. Thanks

    Re: UX question

    Hi,

    first, a heartly welcome

    To your questions:

The depth rating of the UX model is "no limit, all depths, that you can reach".

This is the offical statement from Sinn. But this is only theoretical, cause no proof pressure machine can simulate "no limit".

A real test with official testimonial from the "German Lloyd" engineers has the result, that this watch (the body) was fit down to 12,500 meter = 1250 bar. This was tested, may be, more pressure is possible. But one limitation exist:

The vacuum tube around the Quartz (from every manufacturer) damage between 600 and 800 bar - no technical way, to prevent it.

    To the 1st service:

The UX has a LiO-battery with a lifetime warranty of 7 years. Than you have to change it - together with the silicon oil. For this time, this service can only be at the Sinn factory in Frankfurt/Germany. Price is round about 70 Euro.

And at last: The build in Quartz movement is one of the best from the world. The accuracy should be under 10 to 5 seconds per year.

Hope, you are find to Sinn.

    cheers

    Re: UX question

    Welcome to the forum Fitzroy!!

The UX is waterproof to any reachable depth because it is filled with silicon oil. All hydro watches are quartz as this is the only way to do it. It will not work with an automatic. The battery in the UX is good apparently for up to 7 years. When the battery needs to be replaced, it has to be sent to Sinn in Frankfurt Germany to be done and they will service the watch and refill with new silicon oil and then you are good again for another 7 years.

I'm not too sure what the inside of the UX looks like and don't know how much is filled with silicon oil but I have heard that there is a bladder which allows for oil expansion due to temperature changes. Hopefully others can expand upon this.

Hope this is helpful to you.

    cheers,
    Tim

There is a membrane in the caseback of the silicone-oil filled watches which compensates for temperature-change caused volume change of the silicone oil. Over time, an air bubble will form which does not affect the functionality of the watch - see the article on the bubble in the articles section of this forum.

Thanks for all the info, sounds like a great watch, not excited about having to send to Germany for new battery etc but 7 years is along time so its not too bad. Cheers

I should've read this thread before asking my q about the EZM2/UX! If that service fee is accurate, it's not too bad
