Who makes more watches a year , Sinn or Tutima?

I always thought Tutima was a larger company since I see many of their watches in stores and they do a lot of advertising, but when I look on ebay or sales forums, Sinns outnumber Tutimas by about 3:1. this includes German ebay.de btw.
So what's going on here? Does Sinn really make more watches than Tutima? or does Tutima make more and their owners just never want to sell them? :)

In Martin's excellent report on his visit to the Sinn factory he states "About 60 Sinn employees put out ca. 14,000 watches per year."

Not too sure on the number for Tutima.

I do know that with the high demand for U1, U2 and UX watches and the waiting lists for these watches, some owners have been tempted to sell their U for a profit to somebody on a waiting list or looking at a lengthy wait. Some owners have purchased their U as a commodity to sell when the demand far exceeds the supply, seeing an opportunity to make money. This accounts for some of the U series watches coming up for sale second hand.

Good question. I have a related question and it concerns the Lemania 5100 movement that Sinn does not have access to anymore.

Does Tutima still have access to the Lemania 5100 movement and if yes, why?

I agree with Tim, the situation of long waitlist is a real problem. It gives rise to people who will sell their U series for a profit. Especially now that a price increase is pending.

Still, there are others who have sold theirs because they feel that the U series is not the watch for them or to fund other watch purchase.

Good point Jeff. to expand on that, some people don't seek out the ownership experiences of the U's and when they get their U watch, it's either too heavy or too large for their wrists or both.

I heard that the last of the 5100 stock was given to Tutima as they had the German military contract to fullfill and a few were set aside for Sinn or Sinn had a few left over, not sure which but Sinn used them in their D1 142s. Not sure how many went to Tutima but I'm sure the lion's share went there.

    What a shame!
These U boomers should go back to the stock exchange and make money there! Because of these guys I´ve waited 11 years for my
    " listprice Daytona ".

Direct sales and lack of advertising is what keeps Sinn prices down ... though it might be argued that for the American market, Watchbuys isn't really a direct marketing agent for Sinn so much as an intermediate thing between a direct marketing agent (as the watchshops in germany are which offer Sinn watches at Sinn's direct sales prices) and an authorized dealer, at least as far as the surcharge over German prices is concerned.

I have always assumed that tutima was much smaller than Sinn. It would be interesting to learn how many watches are put out at Ganderkesee annually.

    FWIW,

As a tourist in Germany relying on public transport, I found Sinn was more prevelant and much easier to find in shops than Tutima.

A taxi driver even commented on my 756S, "Sinn, good clocks".

Part of the phenomenon may be explained by the fact that Tutima is frequently partnered with its sister brand Boccia (fashion watches, for all I know) and would be present in less specialist watch shops than Sinn ... as a Sinn AD's margins are small (in Germany), specialist watch shops may be more attracted to Sinn than dealers specializing in fashion watches. Of course a WIS may overlook a couple of Tutimas tucked into a corner next to two or three display cases of Boccias.
