    Zenith 146 on eBay...

    Dear Forum,

Itís been a while since I last posted here.

Iíve been looking at a 146 on eBay. See link.

Itís been on there for quite some time. The condition looks too good to be true. Is it a refinished piece or do you think it is in excellent original condition and been hanging around only because of asking price?

Interested to know the thoughts of the forum members.

    Many thanks.

    Will

The watch does looks good, not sure if the dial has been refinished. Would ask seller for more pictures of the dial as some are out of focus

It is a franken: an early 1950's case, originally intended for a cal 143 chronograph (you can see the EP number on the inside of the case), with the dial and movement of an early 1960's cal. 146 D.

I find it surprising that a cal 146 can fit at all in a cal 143 case.

The hands I'm not sure of, looks like a mix of 1950's (hour and minute) and 1940's (minute counter) hands.

    Thank you for replies.
    That would explain it!

That need not be as surprising as it seems. Both are 14''' movements and the difference is only 1/10th of a mm (31.6mm for the Cal. 143, 31.7mm for the Cal. 146) so you could probably adjust that with the right movement holder ring. Assuming you also transfer the dial, you would not have problems with the dial feet and holes for the hands (size, and positioning for subdials) and it's then a matter of the movement height. I can't find the height of the Cal. 143 but the 146 is 5.95mm or 6.75mm depending on the version (presumably without/with hour totaliser. So, presuming it's the same for the Cal. 143 (depending on whether it's based on the Expark 4 - without hour totaliser - or the Expark 40 - with hour totaliser), if you put a Cal. 146D (5.95mm) into a case designed for an Expark 40, you should be fine. Last potential problem: height of crown in movement and height and exact positioning of pushers. But with some DIY levers between pushers and movement, you might even get away with that.....
