ZENITH GRAND PRIX PARIS 1900 advice request

    Dear Friends,

This piece of art has been in the possession of my family for 3 generations now and during its lifetime (upon my knowledge) it survived 2 wars, it was even stolen once and then a year later on found and recovered. Even thought that it is in working condition, it is in bad shape (missing glass and third hand) I believe that it needs a service/repair. do you think i could order these 'replacement' parts online or i has to be sent to an authorised Zenith Service Centre?
I would also appreciate if you could help on identifying it's year or any other info about it. there is also (looks like engraved by hand) a number on the right side of the serial number (something like 5370) and i was wondering if that is some serial number? service number? or what could it be.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your beautiful Zenith heirloom.

It is an interesting piece: the oldest gold Zenith pocket watch I've seen so far (with the Zenith brand name).

The case number dates it around 1910. Perhaps the movement number (if you also open the inner case lid) could tell more.

The hand written number 5370 is a service mark and could refer to 1953 as the last (?) year of service.

To have it serviced and cleaned, you don't necessarily have to send it to Zenith, a specialised watchmaker could do the job. Based on your location, forum members could probably give you some advice.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks sempervivens,

I will try to open the inner case lid and take a pic of the movement number.

    Cheers

The movement number confirms the date c. 1910.

As for the movement and patent details, other forum members (Hartmut, Silke) will be able to tell more.

Concerning where to have it serviced, others can also advise you , here or over on the vintage forum, it depends a bit on your location I guess, whether in the U.S. or Europe, UK or Germany and so on.

The movement is probably a 19''' Cal. N.V.S.I sav. (i.e. a 19 ligne [=43mm] movement of the newer generation of Zenith movements [introduced around 1905] in savonette ["hunter" - i.e. small seconds at right angles to the crown] form and with the Charles Rosat "snail regulator" on the balance [patented on 18th of October 1904]). I can't tell how many jewels it has but from here, it looks as if the entire geartrain is in bushings so that it would be a 7 jewel movement. That about sums it up. A very nice watch.

Oh, and: Welcome to the Forum!

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your beautiful Zenith!
Outstanding piece and condition! However i would doubt that you will be able to find a matching second hand from the same period, so the replacement could be unavoidable :(
