Review: I bought this for my Skyhawk when I first bought the watch. This is before I knew Citizen can replace the crystal; with a sapphire crystal. When the shield is placed on the watch, you can feel "rubber". Also on an
angle, you see it. After two or three months, the edges start the "yellow". It does it's job in preventing scratches though. Including shipping it costs about $15. For about $100 you can just get the crystal replaced and it will be scratch proof for a VERY long time (no need to replace it) and it will look MUCH better than the Zagg protector. IMO, keep your mineral crystal until it scratches, then just have citizen replace the crystal.. and than you will not have to worry ever again.

    Still researching...

    4th Generation?

These could be some of the features based on improvements on Citizens "newer watches"--- Could these features be included in the 4th generation? Possibly!

Skyhawk currently uses the u600 movement

    The u680 movement improvements are:
Adds China (BPC call signal) atomic radio reception- UPDATE 03/29/11- I am not sure what they are going to do with this. If Citizen adds Satellite Time, then they are going to have to introduce a new module replacing the atomic time to satellite time. Other than that issue, this module would wok great!
3.5 year power reserve vs. 2.5 years in the older U600 module.
The Date changes with the timezone and is not a "slave" to the home setting. - This was a major issue people had with traveling abroad. Glad they fixed it!

Satellite Timekeeping: (This would be great if Citizen adds it to the Skyhawk!)

For 2011, CITIZEN introduces “Eco-Drive SATELLITE WAVE,” a limited edition watch with a totally new timekeeping system.
This next-generation timepiece searches for the closest of the 24 navigation satellites that orbit the earth.
It captures the day, date and time signals the satellite emits from space, 20,000 kilometers above the earth.
Since the satellite signals are controlled by atomic clocks, this watch’s timekeeping is ultra precise.
Each of the 24 navigation satellites orbits the earth once every twelve hours, so that this watch receives the signals from any open space, even in the boundless Western Pacific or atop the world’s highest peak.

Based on the "Appleseed" scheduled to be released Fall 2011

So, when will the 4th generation be released?
The Appleseed watch is set for the fall of 2011 and will be Citizen's first Satellite Time watch. My best educated guess is that Citizen will release this technology on a massive scale with the Skyhawk. It is their most technological advanced watch and is an extremely popular line. I am sure this will then bleed into their other Atomic watches they offer.

Time frame: The 3rd generation was released Aug 2007. Come summer of 2012, the 3rd gen watch will be 5 years old. My best guess for a release date will be Late summer/early Fall of 2012.

Including shipping both ways, I would say 3-4 weeks at the most. When Citizen's replaces the sapphire crystal, they have to disassemble the face of the watch. It would be easy to replace the bezel at that point. The sapphire crystal is amazing and worth the replacement. If you replace the bezel, your watch will look almost brand new! I say go for it! Good Luck!

Re: Citizen Skyhawk -Collectors Guide- Everything you wanted and more!

Thanks for this topic. I picked up a JY0005-50E on ebay about month ago - the bezel, slide rule and bracelet are pretty beat up but the crystal is in great shape. I'm thinking of changing the parts. Any idea of prices? And did I understand that the bezel = slide rule + inner measurement ring?

Edit: Citizen US and Citizen Canada returned me the prices for parts. As of 4/10/2011.

    Citizen US
    Bracelet $142.01
    Bezel $60.00
Case $80.20 (The case includes the bezel and crystal)

    Citizen Canada
    Bracelet for JY0005-50E $134.50
    Bezel $62.60
    Case $122.50
    Plus taxes

So it only cost $80.20 to replace the case of the skyhawk? That sounds like a great deal! I had my skyhawk for 2 years now and no scratches yet, but at least I know if I do scratch it up, the case is changeable. Thanks for the helpful info!

Re: Citizen Skyhawk -Collectors Guide- Everything you wanted and more!

Thanks a lot for this valuable info. I have been eyeing on Skyhawks JY0005-50E for some time. I don't like quartz or digital timepieces, but I am an accuracy obsessed watch maniac + solar power + no battery requirement = Skyhawk series.

Where is the best place (Price wise, of course) to buy these watches, please? I will be very happy if you could enlighten me with some info, please.

    Very Best Regards . . .

    Serdal
