Received by email:Hi Admin,
I am an avid Garmin user and off-roader for the last 25 years.
I recently purchased the Fenix and wanted to let you know that despite the manuals and specs saying otherwise, you can actually upload maps to the unit!
There are several on-line sources of ready made maps which have been converted from Open Source maps etc to the Garmin format. The ones to look for are the 'IMG' files for Garmin units i.e. in the form 'filename.img'.
Download the 'IMG' file you are interested in.
Attach the Fenix to your PC or MAC in USB mode and open the unit drive folder as it appears on the PC or MAC.
There is a folder called 'Garmin' - open it.
Rename the existing gmapbmap.img file in that folder to any other name e.g. origgmapbmap (so you don't lose it and you can rename it later to restore it).
Copy your downloaded IMG file into that same 'Garmin' folder and rename it to gmapbmap.img
Disconnect your Fenix and let it reload it's data (this happens when you disconnect it from the PC or MAC automatically).
Your new basemap will now appear in the unit!
- due to the limitation of the screen and the relatively slow speed of the Fenix onboard cpu, it may take a while for anything to show on the Fenix screen, but patience usually rewards.
- the smaller the IMG file the faster the Fenix will be able to respond due to having less processing to do.
