Orient Ray Orange Review and lots of pictures

    Orient Ray Orange

I recently acquired an Orient Ray, here are some specs borrowed from the web:

    Case: Steel
    Dial: Orange
    Lume: Yes
    Crystal: hardened mineral
    Bracelet: Steel
    Water Resistance: 200 Meters
    Dimensions: 41.5 X 47
Lug to Lug vertically: 47 mm
    Lugs: 22 mm (strap)
    Thickness: 13.5 mm

    First impression:

It is definitely a diver watch, the orange color of the dial is unlike anything else I have seen, it's fun ! The head is heavy, it has some heft to it, (heavier that the longines hydro conquest 39mm with the bracelet) The hands are black, the hour, minute and second hands have luminescence material, when inactive look orange, but once activated by the sun are bright green. The hour markers are applied, polished on the sides and it's the same as the lume on the hands.

The Polished & brushed case is very nice, it is polished on the sides and brushed on top.

The bezel is your typical diver watch, it's black with silver numbers. It has a luminescent Pip at the 12 o'clock position. It hasa 120 click bezel. This feature has been so important to me lately, I have to run 5 minute test, so I'm constantly using the bezel to run my test. After 4 months using it I haven't put any scratches on the bezel. I do some pipe fitting through out the day, so I'm very impressed. Some people complain about turning the bezel being really hard, in my experience, I say it is easy to turn the bezel with my indice finger and my thumb while the watch is on my wrist.

The hands the hour hand it's a very distinctive two part syringe, the minute hand is a very slender sword style, the second hand is an arrow at the end. The lume on this Ray is out of this world! I have never had a Seiko diver, and I know those set the standards, but this watch has the best lume in the watches of my current collection, even the Squale. The luminosity last all night, very helpful to check the time when I wake up in the middle of the night.

The crystal is a flat Hardened mineral crystal, very clear. It is very slightly, raised over the bezel. Like I mentioned above, after 4 months using it I haven't put any scratches on the crystal either . I do some pipe fitting through out the day, so I'm very impressed. I swore I would never buy another watch without a Saphire crystal, but after watch this video I pulled the trigger on this orient diver. Check it out!

The dial is a bright orange, with the Orient crest at the 12 o'clock position, the orient brand logo underneath it, and a third line has the word automatic in cursive. At the 3 o'clock position It has a day/date complication, which I love! It has a polished frames. Mine has the option of displaying the date in English or Spanish. At the 6 o'clock position has the frase: water resistant in cursive and underneath it, reads: 200 m.

The Lume is great! it will last through the night. The hour, minute and second hands have luminosity. And each hour marker has lume. Like I mentioned above, the lume it's better than the one on the Squale 30 ATMOS I own.

The crown it is at the 3 o'clock position, It is a screw down crown, it is signed with the Orient crest. The water resistance is 200 meters. This watch

The movement is an in house one, 21 jewels, automatic, self winding, non hacking nor hand woundable. It doesn't take very much to get it fully wound, maybe 20 minutes of steady activity. Or a couple of hours of regular activity. The rotor is a bit noisy, you can hear it winding the watch. Since it is a 21K bph the sweep of the second hand is a bit jumpy.

The Bracelet is is of good quality, solid end links, solid links, nice combination of brushed and polished finishes.

Verdict: Just like I have read every where before, Orient is a extremes good value! A lot of watch for the money, specially if you are able to buy at a deep discount. The watch feels made of quality . The movement is good, is lacking hacking and hand wound features. But considering that the money that I paid for it, would equal 1 Seiko 5's, I won't complain.

Would I buy it again? Definitely yes! this is the watch for going to the beach.

For anyone considering this watch, it is worth every penny!

    Best regards,

A good review thank you. I must have missed the mention of the second crown and what it is used for.

It would be awesome if the chapter ring was black like the Mako USA White Dial
