How does one actually "join" a forum?

Just curious, I've seen folks who say that they are a 'member' of xyz forum...

I just want to know the secret handshake and when I can get the cool hat...

Or, by simply posting and owning a Doxa, am I now a 'member'?

    Thanks

While I am not at liberty to discuss the secret handshake, I believe the fact that you have posted here makes you a member of this forum (pending official review by the Council). Now buy a Doxa and get a hat!

In all seriousness, I think to be a "member" of a given forum you need to post there on a semi-regular basis and to most of the "regulars" should be able to recognize you by your screen name. They should also know what your first name is. I know the first names of most of the guys (gals) that post in here on a regular basis.

Stick around, I can assure you that you are welcome here........and that people will recognize you as one of the members in no time.
    Best Regards,
    Jason

You actually have to buy at least 20 patches and sew them on to all of your clothes. Then, when the CEO at your place of work is delivering a key speech on global strategy, you interrupt them whilst looking like the Tango man and announce that the future is orange.

They may kick me off for this BUT, the handshake instructions are inside the hat when you get it.
