    Scratched Crystal on 800TI

    Hi All,

Have a few questions about a scratch on my 800Ti's crystal.

Went diving and sometime during the trip I banged my watch and it left a light 1cm long scratch on the crystal. Funny thing is that I don't recall any incidents at all and it was only when I was already on the plane ride back did I realize.

What is the crystal made out of? I'm thinking Sapphire.. if so, will diamond paste work to get the scratch out?

I know that at least one DOXA has AR coating. Does the 800TI have it? When wet, the droplets reflect back a blue tint.

What are my options besides diamond paste? It's deep enough that I can get my fingernail to catch on it therefore I'd have to go pretty darn deep to polish it out.

DOXA, do you replace crystals? If so, please let me know what I need to do to get a work order placed.

    Thanks!

Doxa uses sapphire crystals with AR coating, but the AR is only on the inside of the crystal. I recall a thread that was circulating around the internet with a Panerai that had a scratched crystal. The owner had been to a party, and had a few too many drinks and scratched the crystal. I don't recall exactly what substance he used to polish the scratch out, but it was AMAZING the difference before and after shots. The scratch was completely gone. I will see if I can find that thread.

"Jewellers Rouge".......... Just add a few drops of water to make it a paste and rub it over the scratches- buffing with a small rag.

This is a very interesting piece, because I have never, ever seen a sapphire crystal scratch. You must have drug the crystal across the corner of a stainless steel table or something really extreme to do something like this.

T has the answer with Jewelers Rouge or Diamond Paste ,

I have managed to scratch the Sapphire on a couple of pieces over the years .... one after a Motorcycle Spill and the other after a serious whack against a metal object ... both accidental

    All the best,
    Vic

Thanks for the answers. With the AR being on the inside, I have no qualms on using jewelers rouge or diamond paste.

I'm thinking I may have hit the underside of the launch platform.. but unsure. That's the only thing that comes to mind.

I scratched a sapphire crystal, not sure how it happened (but I have my suspicions). It's hardly noticeable unless you catch it in just the right light.

As much as it hurts, but isn't that what happens? What does it tell you when you see a watch / car / motorcycle / ..... of certain age, yet in pristine condition? I'll be honest, I'm not happy about every next scratch, but I consider them battle-scars

Both my wife's and my Fortis Flieger have several scratches on the sapphire crystal. But then, hers has seen over 11 years of continuous wrist time and mine has logged ca 8 years. To us, they are at least as beautiful as when they were new.

I have to say........I kinda agree with this, and since you got the scratch diving...........I might be inclined to leave it the way it is unless it is very noticeable and annoying.

    Re: Scratched Crystal on 800TI

Battle scars and patina on the case and bracelet I don't mind. There are quite a number of scratches on my 800TI that even a green scouring pad cant 'brush' out. But when it comes to the crystal, I prefer it being spotless, especially so on a sharkhunter where I can clearly see the white line/crater against the black dial.

I ordered some diamond paste from ebay.. too bad it's coming in from China therefore I'll be waiting until at least next week to go at it.

I probably would leave a few battle scars and not worry about it. I also probably wouldn't have the patience to attempt to remove a scratch from the crystal and would just get the crystals replaced at the next service if it were bad enough, but more power to you if you can fix it by yourself.

Just be careful and mask the bezel or otherwise take care to not get any polishing compound on it.
