It appears to be an IWC Big Pilot, Ref 5004. To my poor eyes it appears to be genuine, but I'll leave that to members with greater expertise.

The printing doesn't look right to me. The printed numerals and minute markers should be effectively 2 dimensional, only imperceptibly raised when viewed at just the right angle. The numerals here are clearly domed/raised, and appear to be bubbling/deteriorating in numerous spots. It could just be normal wear and sun damage, but I would be very suspicious.

What's the back story? You'd given us no info aside from the pictures.

I rang IWC and confirmed it is big pilot 500401 by its serial number. Bought it in a car boot as unworking. Took it home and started it up and it runs beautifully

A watch can't be authenticated with a serial number over the phone. The only way IWC will authenticate a watch is to physically send it in (image below from the IWC website). If you did in fact buy a real Big Pilot out of the boot of a car, you can be pretty certain that it was stolen...

The straps on the big pilot are usually a great way to tell. If it’s printed calf skin I’de be very weary. If it’s real alligator I’de be more hopeful
