    Cost to service Stowa Classic?

    Hi all,

I got bit by the horology bug a few months ago and have been learning and reading forums ever since. I am getting ready to make my first Stowa purchase in the near future (Classic 40 automatic) and will probably buy pre-owned.

Having never had to service a watch before, I have no idea what a basic service costs (cleaning and oil). I understand the cost can vary greatly if repair is required in addition to a service, but I’m just trying to get a ballpark of what a basic service will set me back.

I’m excited to tap into the reservoir of knowledge this forum possesses. Thank you all in advance.

You might try to visit or call a watchmaker in your area to get a realistic price. I have had a couple serviced recently at the Seiko Service center, quartz watches were about $125. They list service prices by movement number or caliber. The simpler mechanical ones are listed for around $150 to $250, so I would expect something in that price range for a ball park number. Any needed repairs I would expect to be extra. Depending on the age or the watch, I would expect some repairs, like a new main spring if the original has fatigued.

I don't think anyone can give you much more accurate pricing without examining it.

The horology bug can also bite you in the wallet.....

enjoy your watch and good luck.

My old watchmaker, who used to learn on Glashütte watches, asks €90 for a three-hand watch, €150 for a chrono. However, I realize that his pricing is the exception to the rule. Stowa prices are different as are the prices of other watchmakers. Get quotes when the time for a service has come.

It is not too expensive, given the quality of the watch, IMHO.

    I miss those days.

Great advice here already. I just want to add that as a new enthusiast there is also a chance that your tastes will change over time and you'll flip the Stowa before it's even time for a service. Just something to keep in mind.

Granted Stowa makes excellent watches and while you could send it to them for repair and upkeep you will probably spend less finding a good local person. And the money you save you can use to buy another Stowa

it's a basic ETA movement so any competent watchmaker can do the job. my guy charges $125-150 for a basic overhaul + oiling

Pulled the trigger finally. Found a nice used one manufactured in Jan. 2018 for sale so hopefully no need to service for years to come.
