Marine Original Silver Dial Durowe 7440 prototyp>>>>

As you all know Jörg published pics of the new Marine Original on www.basel2010.com

Here are the pics I made in Basel

The Durowe 7440 is still a prototype without any decoration/finish. However - if you have a close look onto the added pictures you will recognize that some progress has been made regarding the bridges. The new bridges are somehow better balanced and do please the eyes more (my take). Jörg mentioned that adding a swan neck fine adjustment would be another option to "pimp" the Durowe 7440. He mentioned that it is quite possible that this swan neck fine adjustment will be manufactured in-house. Time will tell.

    Welcome back Mike!

Do you have any insight what we can expect from the production movement - in terms of decoration/ finish? I am holding back my purchase of the MO for this one but wondering if the wait until Nov/Dec and the addition EUR400+ would be worth it.

Thanks for the very nice photos Mike.

As much as I like the new sterling silver dial, I'm not sure there is enough value-added to the Durowe 7440 over the Unitas to get me interested. I realize this is a work in progress, but if the changes are limited to replacing the top plates, I'll probably pass.

Just a personal opinion, but I would love to see the movement further modified with some substantive changes in performance. A seven-day power reserve, for example. Or a free-sprung, adjustable-mass balance. Or chronometer adjustment/regulation, with German DIN certification.

You made some valid points. However you must look at the Durowe 7740 to be an ongoing experimental project ( I am tempted to compare it with the development of the A-35 Damasko in-house movement). You have to start somewhere and you will end up somewhere. And Jörg already phrased it that way:

    Aim:
A permanent increase in the value added by manufacturing
additional parts such as screws, jewels, locking mechanisms,
precision adjustments, etc. in Germany, possibly culminating
in the manufacture of movement blanks.

The Durowe 7740 is still a "vision" to be transferred into reality.

I see your point, and I tend to agree. I can't recall the exact steps, but Nomos went through a similar evolution from the Peseux 7001 movement in the late 1990s through the Nomos 1T, 1TS, 1TSP, etc before culminating in the Alpha movement (introduced 1996?). Now there is the Tangomat too.

I respect the Stowa vision, and I believe they'll get there. I think I may wait for this particular train to pass through a few more stops before I hop on, though.

Again, great to have you back, Mike.

I like the Durowe vision and hope for many wonderful movements down the road! But is it fair to conclude that for now the only difference between a regular Unitas 6498 and the Durowe are the back plates?

Yes, plates and balance cock. The version shown in 2009 (as you can see) was fitted with a swan neck.
    Kind regards

I think we are seeing the benefit of Stowas investor partnerships with all this new activity. Should be exciting for all the Stowa Fans.

I could see myself giving something with a Durowe movement a very hard look.
