Stowa Flieger 6498 / Marine Original case issue

    Hi everybody,

I've been thinking about getting another pilot style watch for some time and recently bought Stowa Flieger 6498, I'm almost happy with my purchase - the watch looks and feels great, 6498 ticking sound is just awesome but what I'm not entirely satisfied with is the quality deviations.

The watch that I initially received had few problems like dark spot on the hand lume and movement finishing issues, luckily this was resolved by Stowa quite fast and I received another piece with flawless hands and movement but instead got a case with off center engraving and poorly fitting caseback, it looks ok from the crown side but has a visible gap from engraving side, like if the case body or the caseback was crooked.
I contacted Stowa again but this time got a reply that this gap is caused by the inner thread and there's nothing to worry about.

To make things worse my wife who usually thinks that all my watches look the same noticed this uneven fit too:(

I believe this Flieger shares the same case with Marine Original, does anyone else have the same issue?

Here're some pictures to better understand which gap I'm talking about.

    Dear troy1000 ,

    thanks for your thread.

Like i answered personaly to you in a mail, this gap is the result of a good gasket and the inner thread.
This thread has a messurement which is exacly this gap.

Maybe if you send the watch we can try a thinner gasket to optimize this gap a bit.

We will try but this kind of cases has this result - some a bit more, some a bit less.

    We can try.

    bye for now

Unless it affects the water resistance (which I think it doesn't) I wouldn't worry about the 1 mm gap.
Enjoy your watch, life is too short.

    Hello Mr.Schauer,
appreciate your response, yes I'd prefer to send the watch to you to minimize/eliminate this gap, the better fitting casebacks certainly look better.

Can't agree with that, why to by a mechanical watch if not for build quality and fine details?

It's much easier to enjoy something like this ( it's Marine Original, but case is the same):

I can’t be wrong. Comparable gap in the second pic, imho.
    Kind regards

I just wanna comment on how cool it is for the company’s owner to reply to this thread. It’s great to purchase from a company who cares about their customers on a personal level. For the record, I don’t own a Stowa, although I would like to get a MO at some point.

Yes, I think so too, Mike.
It might depend on the angle you shoot the pic, whether this 'gap' is noticeable or not,

It can't be comparable, there's just no way I can make such photo of my watch where the line between top and bottom case parts will look the same.

It's not some shadow or effect of close up, the gap is visible at arm's length, it's even possible to stick a piece of thick paper into it quite easily something that I absolutely can't do with any other watch, even 8 times cheaper seiko or orient. That's a shame because otherwise the watch is just awesome.

Update from my side: after one more postal round-trip the watch looks a lot better, all case lines are the same. Thank you Mr.Schauer!
