Stowa Flieger - Unitas 6498-1 vs modified Sellita 215

    Hello,

I am about to get a watch with one of these movements. I like both styles (center and 6 o'clock seconds hand).
But I don't understand why the price is so different - Sellita 800 euro and Unitas 1050 euro?

Is it only because Unitas has the 'SWISS' stamp on it?
What about reliability, are they the same?
I found a lot of comparisons between ETA 2804-1 and Sellita SW215, but not between 6498-1 and 215.

    Thanks!

Case diameter is different, movement fit and finish (for example: swan neck vs. No swan neck) is different. Almost all is different. However, both, Unitas and Sellita, are Swiss.

Ok, but that doesn't explain the price difference. Also, anything about reliability between these two movements?

Sorry to say, but it does. You just can't get an Unitas with Geneva stripes, perlage on base plate (see the plate under the balance wheel), with swan neck fine adjustment for the same price of an ETA 2801 or Sellita 215.

Also, anything about reliability between these two movements?
The ETA/Unitas started as a pocket watch movement and proved its reliability over decades, doesn't matter if you go for the -1 or -2 version. The Sellita is a contemporary mechanical movement, based on an ETA, so it is considered to be rugged and reliable as well. Accuracy might be better with the Sellita, however the Unitas features the swan neck which helps to achieve similar performance.
    Kind regards
    Mike

In Stowa context, the deco on Unitas is beyond pretty, it alone worth the different.

The Sellita based watch will be a 40mm case with 20mm lug width and have a central seconds sweep hand. The Unitas will be a 41mm case with 22mm lugs but will have a less desirable (and historically inaccurate) small seconds hand at 6 or no seconds had at all.

The Unitas is a much more impressive movement visually. The first photo is of the ETA 2801 which is very similar to the hand winding Sellita movement. The second photo is of the Unitas (in a Stowa Marine Original); it is obviously a larger size and the swan neck is on the bottom right.

The ideal Stowa flieger is the Flieger Original, a Unitas based watch with the movement modified with a hacking central seconds sweep hand. Sadly, it is no longer available. I have seen other companies such as Tourby offer a central seconds Unitas so I am unsure why Stowa no longer offers the FO. If they ever offer it again I will buy one instantly.

Thank you all for the information!
Historical accuracy doesn't mean that much for me, as it's my first mechanical watch, and I was looking for something reliable and good looking.

I actually prefer the seconds hand at 6 as it makes the dial more complicated, without added height and price of a chronograph.

I already ordered it, will post some photos in April :)
