There's been a VC Malte Grand Classique for sale on the forums at a reasonable price.

Can you think of any other Pateks that have more complex dials? The issues I have with the 5196 are the simplicity of the dial, the solid caseback, and the mismatch between the movement size and the case size.

Why not go with a Omega Constellation from the 50's or 60's - Those are well within your price range and plenty to be had. They will easily fit your criteria for size as well.
    Current watch collection:

    Rolex GMT II 116710LN

The Saxonia Thin is definitively timeless.

I prefer the style of the 1815, more classical, but not as fussy as a Breguet Classique.

I've been tempted by the steel C-case Constellations of the 1970s. That said, given the funky design, I was thinking of it as a novelty watch, more so than a dress watch. I'm not sure I love it enough to go for the gold.
