VC Steel Ultra Thin Conspiracy Theory

    Dear Fellow WIS,

Here is my VC Steel Ultra Thin Theory.

So when the original steel 3rd gen three hander Overseas came out, it was originally around 22k.

All of a sudden, without warning, the price dropped to 19,300. This was without any announcement or fanfare.

I surmise that dropping the 3 hander to 19,300, VC can position the Steel Ultra Thin between 22-25k, which is about half the price of the time only white gold Ultra Thin.

Or - they could have just dropped the price to be more competitive.

I am hopping for the former, and not the latter.

I am going to try to not spend any money in the time being!

Interesting. I am secretly hoping that people are just being smarter and do not enjoy paying over $20k for a steel 3 hander (no matter how good the movement finishing is).
Maybe the bubble will pop, the Nautilus will go back to $22k and VC and AP can drop the prices even further. One can always hope.

Honestly you're probably closer to the truth, and the hypothetical arrival of the new ALS sports watch might also have an impact on that. SIHH 2020 is going to be big.

I paid about 16k for my 3d Gen VC O 3 hander. That's what the discount was back then. No biggie. Got a discount on my AP RO , too , tho less than on the VC O.

Today , w/ Rolex/SS's and PP I can find no discounts. Also a few others are selling for more than MSRP.

    Tomorrow is another day.

When the Overseas came out it was priced at $19,900. Not $22k. Prices have dropped very slightly to $19,300. The Overseas struggled at the start (hence the price drop) and is now doing great.

VC would not release a SS ultra-thin at $25k or below. Too little difference between that price and the regular version. If they do release an ultra-thin, it will be $30k or above.

Some other brands (e.g., GO) dropped their U.S. retail prices several months ago. I was told that this was to reflect changes in the dollar/euro exchange rate. Not sure I completely believe the reason (maybe to be more competitive?). If the prices in Europe have remained the same, then perhaps it is an issue of exchange rate adjustments.

It was 20k Euro and 20,900 USD at one point, I remember because I saw them in NYC when I serviced my 15202. VC may have changed prices multiple times

I remember it being 20 something because I was going to buy it.

Both the articles you link do not have the price in US dollars, just Euros. Also, the first link is for the black dial version which came out over 2 years after the blue, silver, and brown dials.

Both Hodinkee and A Blog To Watch had it at $19,900:

I saw that, it must have changed multiple times it was definitely 20,900 when I looked at them in NYC. Not in the 19s

At one stage it was $20,900:

The price decrease may well have been a currency adjustment and not a price increase. Then again the Historiques 1942 just increased in price, while not other VC's did. So it may have been an adjustment just on one model line.

Yeah - I am not too sure, the changes on this model’s pricing is confusing to me to say the least.
