Watches with Time on a Subdial

My most recent watch purchase was my Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde... which got me thinking. Lately I've realized that there are quite a few watches I like, where the main time dial is actually a subdial. And in fact, my other high-end watch, the GO Panomaticlunar, is also a watch with time on a subdial. There are quite a few other watches with that feature that I like, and it's something I may continue to consider buying, and have a small collection within my collection, so to speak.

Here are some of my favorites I've seen lately... they're mostly high-end, and this seems to be generally something found in high-end or niche watches. But I included a couple I like that aren't because of the brand or quirkiness.

Do you have any favorites? Other watches with this type of subdial?

Hamilton ODC X-03 - This is the most oddball... 3 separate movements, mechanical for the main time, and quartz for the other two. But as a bit of a space geek, I couldn't no include a watch that is so space themed and has a picture of Jupiter taking up much of the dial.

Hmm, not sure whether this (or other regulators) would count?

I was thinking regulators don't count, because they generally use the whole dial for the seconds or minutes. That Neinaber is very nice though.

Drat. But thanks. Also, I realize it wouldn't be considered high end, but there are regulators that would.

Re: Watches with Time on a Subdial

I’ve always been of two minds about watches with the time within a smaller subdial. They’re often really neat because they allow for various dial materials or treatments to be showcased. On the other hand, they shrink the main time telling function into a smaller area which leaves a lot of inert space on the face of the watch.

That’s one of the reasons I was so thrilled to pick up a Bernhard Lederer Universe Planet Paris. Here’s a photo of the MT1 Tourbillon, just to keep it high end.

Here’s a link to my review of the Planet Paris if anybody is interested.

Arnold and Son make some of my favorite designs. Unfortunately they are huge for my small wrist (usually 43-44mm with 52-53mm lug to lug) otherwise I'd definitely own one.

Maurice Lacroix makes some upper mid range in this category. Cool, but again, way too big.

Re: Watches with Time on a Subdial

I like some these very much from an aesthetic point of view. However, from the point of view of aging eyes (I now have progressive trifocals and I am only in my early 50s!) I would need one of these to be designed for legibility. Certainly your GO and JD count. But when you add skeletonized elements or other busy stuff, many are simply unreadable (e.g., the first and third A&S ones above). That said, here are a few I particularly like...
