    Gift for fiance

    Hello all!

I would like to surprise my fiance with a nice watch - would be excellent to have some advice. Budget is ~£1000.

I have been looking at the Hamilton Railroad Lady Automatic but cant decide if its pretty or ugly. Also is there something wrong with this watch - there aren't any reviews and it doesn't seem to show up on forum posts. This is the one I'm talking about:

Size: 158.8 KB

The other option would be the Frederique Constant slimline moonphase:

Size: 65.0 KB

    Any thoughts or recommendations?

The best review would be to have her check it out first, unless you know HER taste real well.

I think the jewels distract from the Hammy in my opinion and the FC looks pretty bland. To be honest it would probably my best to get some input from your other half. Another thing that's worth thinking about is, would your fiancee want you to spend that much on a watch for her?

My wife isn't particularly fond of dedicated 'ladies watches' so I bought her a 36mm Nomos Club (with prior consultation) which she loves. A clean and classic design, champagne silver dial so not as as harsh as white one and rich red/orange hands. The 36mm case also fits the slender wrist nicely.

Pretty much on budget too. I think they are (or were) ~£1080.

Absolutely! However this will be a surprise so can't really ask her. Having said that The Hamilton is very much her style. I just worry a bit that the dial is too busy!

Love this watch! In fact this is on the list. Does your wife mind having a manual winder?

Not at all. A few winds every day and occasionally has to reset the time if she's been wearing her little Casio instead.

Now, if it was a watch with a date window I know she'd get bored of having to reset that along with the time and would probably not even bother after a while.

Oh, and another 'pro' for the Club is that my wife has had 2 or 3 of her friends and colleagues compliment her on it, and one even asked my wife if she'd mind if she got the same one.

I've been collecting watches for around 7 years and have never had one comment made about my watches!

There are other watches that are similar to the Hamilton in appearance with a blue strap...

Searching on Chrono24 is often a fruitful way to find models due to sheer volume. Also, posting your criteria like mvmt, size, color, strap vs bracelet, etc, helps the forum members make appropriate suggestions. Good luck.

    Re: Gift for fiance

First of all, I am just stunned by how helpful people on this forum are! Thank you!

So I crumbled and asked the fiance about her preferences - take home messages follow:

    - She is very excited!
    - She prefers a ladies watch so sadly that rules out the Nomos.
    - Automatic would be better but quartz isn't a dealbreaker - same for straps as these could be changed.
    - She likes the look of the FC moonphase, but we will have a look at more options.

Any more suggestions would be great!
