    Thoughts on the AlpinerX Smartwatch?

    Hi!

What does everyone make of the AlpinerX smartwatch that was announced at Basel World this year?

Looks to me like one of the better combinations of smartwatch technology with traditional styling, and also pays homage to the kind of outdoorsy watches that made Alpina famous.

It's an awesome watch. Mine came in about 4 weeks ago. Be aware of the size though. It is 45mm and wears it too!
Very nice weight and balance, the features are incredible and the fact that you can customize it makes even better than others. (i think)

Functionally, it's an Analog/Digital quartz hybrid with some limited "smart watch" features. Perhaps best described as an updated Tissot T-touch for Gadget Lovers. A bit expensive for what it is, compared with comparable Asian models under $250. But then, it's Swiss!

Here are the audiences I see it aimed at:

    1. An acceptable "cheap" sports watch for traditional Swiss watch snobs that will never wear a Casio.

    2. A cool Ski/Hiking/Sailing watch for active people with its Altimeter/Barometer/Altitude/Compass/UV features.

    3. An "F U" to the iWatch, for those that don't like the looks or complexity, but still want a few basic features, like push notifications. But, not having a touchscreen display, it is really more "enhanced" Quartz watch than Smart watch. But, at least it does have a small digital readout, which is a big improvement over the company's previous Analog dial "hybrid smartwatches".

    4. Fitness tracker. The AlpinerX is bit large to work out in. While it's capable of doing this, a Fitbit or iWatch works much better. But, at least it makes a little more sense than than putting an e-strap on a Frederique Constant dress watch! Millennials may actually futz with the glitchy Blue tooth to use it, but let's face it... everyone else will probably just sync it once just to set the time/date, then never again!
