    60s / 70s Cartier Ladies Tank Authentication

    Hi All,

Would appreciate the experts' opinion on if the below is the real deal. The provenance of the watch is unknown and the back of the case is lightly engraved with four lines:

    "Cartier" (in script),
    "18K GOLD"
    "ELECTROPLATED"
    "SWISS"

The movement is rather basic, but from what I understand there was a period in the 60s/70s where Cartier was using very cheap movements.

Appreciate all of your help in advance.

I'm inclined to say fake, how much did you pay for it?

Without taking it into a boutique and seeing, it appears to be a Cartier Vermeil, though the cabochon is throwing me off, yet the backing appears accurate. It’s gold plated, which those were, and it’s obviously been worn very hard. Beyond that, hard to say regarding the movement but it could easily be correct.

It is an absolute fake. The fact that the cheap strap is in better condition than the case itself is a telltale sign. Im at a lack of words concerning the movement as well.

I am not an expert but I suggest you take a look at several Must de Cartier watches on eBay. All have high quality markings on the caseback which identify the .925 silver of the case, as well as showing the gold plating. There are also several mint marks to verify the quality of the gold/silver. Also, all have screws holding the case back on.
All the electroplated watches I have seen had markings that look like they were done by a kid with an awl, and no sign of screws. It's hard to believe Cartier produced something of such poor quality, so I conclude that anything marked "electroplated" is a poor fake.

Thanks all for the feedback. I've taken around to a few dealers and the general sense is that it's a fake. There are a few rumors online that Cartier produced super-low-quality tanks during the quartz crisis, but from what I understand they have no actual substance.

There is no shortage of bull-manure on-line.
