    2013 WUS ST5 Project Design

An early start on the 2013 ST5 Project is required as the movements need to be refurbished and we can make good use of this time to finalise the design. The estimated time of production, including renovating movements, is around 7 months (taking into account a one month holiday for Chinese New Year) from the moment Thomas receives the movements. So realistically, we expect June 2013 to be the completion date at the earliest.

The cost per watch is around US$150, but this will be confirmed once Thomas has started working on the movements and can assess how much work is needed. Torsten, Thomas and I met this night to discuss the specifications for this project and came up with the list below:

    1) Domed acrylic crystal
    2) 38mm SS watch case (refer to the Junghans watch cases below)
    3) Pie-pan dial (refer to Dongfeng dial below)
    4) See-through crystal back to show off sexy ST5 movement
    5) Applied markers suitable for 60s/70s dress watch (again refer to markers on Junghans below)
    6) 18mm lugs
    7) Crown type and size - around 5.5-6mm would be ideal
    8) Dial colour - possibly three choices: sunburst off-white, silver or champagne
    9) Bent minute and seconds hands (possibly with red arrow tip)

Please note, text in red are items we feel are quintessential to this project and are not up for discussion. There will be less scope for voting in this project as we need to maintain a certain flavour in this nod to vintage style watches.

Here are photos of watches which embody the style of watch we are hoping to produce:

    Sounds good...

Can we include the possibility of black as a dial colour?

Can do but will it end up Germasian?

Like I said in the previous thread. Not much or at all Chinese dress watches that come close to the thin, minimalistic Bauhaus style of Glashütte/Junghans/Nomos.
I do like the estheatics but so far most common features on VCMs I've seen are thick hourmarkers, stubby hands (sword or stick) and fairly chuncky/bulletproof cases.

    What case will be used?

Let's see how it goes, the dial colour will be put to the vote anyway so adding another colour, or should I say shade, shouldn't be a problem.

The case will be similar to the Junghans watches shown in the above post.

Registering my interest for this - nothing to comment upon so far, as I like the direction this is going.

Sounds great. I think all of the items designated quintessential are the stuff of classic dress watches from the discussed era and will no doubt look great. The see through case back may not be period correct but it is a great way to display what interests me most about this project, the beautiful ST5.
Out of the three color choices my vote would be for a champagne sunburst dial.

I like the Junghans styled ones and, even at 38mm, I'd get some use out of that.

I don't think it will please the people looking for something more 'cultural' (if that's the right word). There seemed to be some passion there.

    Is the ST5 movement reliable?

Do a little cruising through the forum and you will see that the ST5 has an excellent reputation for both reliability and accuracy.
I am attempting to enter watchmaking school this January (tough to get into as they only take about twelve people per year, so I may have to wait a year) but I can hardly wait to take apart and practice on some ST5 movements that I will be getting from some VCM's in the near future.

The 18mm lug will be the one to get used to for most I guess. I've skinny wrists so not a big problem.
