    SAR bracelet link question

I recently got my first MG SAR & absolutely love it! It's a low serial number from very early in the line & has had some good owners in its life (thankfully!). I did notice something tonight that I haven't seen before & was wondering if the collective wisdom might be able to answer my question. The link on either side of the OEM bracelet clasp has no rubber on it. I was wondering: 1) is this original to the design? or 2) has someone modified the links by taking the rubber off?

I haven't noticed this in any pictures I've come across & I'll post a shot that I took tonight.

Thanks for any help that anyone can give me!
