Great article, particularly the bit about Breguet imitations in history, in textiles I know that it's been common for others to copy iconic designs (Levi's Type 1 506xx for example).

In the modern context, we can recognize the merits of poor commercially produced forgeries (equivalent to affixing a false Armani label on a garment) and fakes which seek to replicate the quality and precision of the original

    Thanks, appreciated.
Agree your comments - my knowledge is watches but "fakes" are EVERYWHERE

Good article, but it doesn't really answer the title question (rhetorical, perhaps?) So, I'll take a stab at it and say no, discussing fakes is not condoning it. In all art, to truly appreciate the pinnacle of the art requires knowledge of the finer points. By discussing what a fake isn't, particularly a good fake that comes close but still misses the mark, you can better appreciate what effort has gone into the manufacture of the genuine piece.

Interesting thoughts - thanks your input.
I think discussing "anything" is fine, as long as one does not argue that counterfeit is legal

    Thanks again
