    Re: Quality of Myth

    Thanks Adam very interesting.
I wasn't aware of the second swim of Jabaz Wolffe and the Rolex "promotion" !!
I agree with the understanding as well. Its great to wear a nice vintage watch and appreciate it beauty, but there is a secondary appreciation of understanding how and where and why it came to be.

    Regards,

    Re: Quality of Myth

    From the blog:
I came across this 1930 Rolex advertisement (left) that implies Jabez Wolffe may have worn the famous Rolex watch during his swims of the English Channel.
Well, that's not true. The ad didn't imply anything like that. In the ad the Jabez Wolffe was presented as a "famous swimmer" (true), who uses his Rolex to time swimmers he coaches (he "times Channel aspirants" with a Rolex), which is also true. In his quote Wolffe just said the Rolex is suitable for "long swims" (true), and that he can always rely on his Rolex during training (again, true).

So I'm wondering , is this myth #3 just your "invention", or was it mentioned anywhere else before?

MYTH 2: Mercedes Gleitze swam the English Channel in 1927 wearing a Rolex Oyster.

It’s a great story but not true.
    Yes, it actually IS true.

She wore the Rolex on a ribbon around her neck for ten hours whilst swimming the English Channel.
Whilst this attempt was not her first, and she failed to cross it completely, she nevertheless did swim the English Channel wearing a Rolex watch!

Nowhere in the Rolex advert does it claim Ms. Gleitze wore the watch on her record-breaking first attempt, but only that she: "carried an 'Oyster' throughout her recent Channel Swim".

So along with the non-myth (well spotted, Okapi001!) about Jabez Wolffe there is still only the single, original "myth" about Rolex, nothing new to be found.
