I'd be inclined to call it a gadget. My phone, computer and kitchen stove tell time, but watch, no.

    Just an opinion, but.....

I think the argument has already been settled here...

Smart watches are not watches, this is why

... and yes, it tells the time, it's worn on your wrist, ergo it's a wristwatch.

Just because they use later technology, and add (significantly) more "complications" doesn't make them any less of a watch.

Just like Quartz, Digital, Solar, Ecodrive, GPS, Spring drive, etc. before them, they are just the current evolution of the theme. Watches will no doubt keep evolving and we will be having the same discussion about "embedded organic pigment watches" or whatever the next breakthrough will be in 10 years time.

Re: Is a Smartwatch Really a Watch?

My I phone displays the time and I wear it in my pocket = pocket watch??

Also my microwave displays the time = kitchen clock??

So my answer to the posed question is no it isn't, it's a computer that you strap on your wrist which also displays the time.

    Yes, it is.

    Certainly, why not.

And display the time it does - extremely accurately, and extremely flexibly, with a wide range of additional complications.

If it's PRIMARY function is to tell the time, then it certainly is a watch/clock.

Here's some other "Computers you strap on your wrist" that also just happen to tell the time for your consideration.

I suppose they aren't watches either because they are microprocessor controlled or have myriad other functions?

Omega even described the original Speedmaster as a "wrist computer" in their early advertising and used similar terminology ("Time Computer"), for other digital models as well.

Here's one you can also put in your pocket...

And there is no doubting that Smartwatches undertake this primary function much better than most "ordinary" watches.

Just as if you paint a number and put some sponsor stickers on a family sedan, and enter it into a road-race, and proceed to thrash the crap out of it, it becomes a race car, if you take a computer, put a watch face on it, strap it on your wrist, and use it to tell time, it becomes a watch.

This is not a matter of opinion, it's simply a matter of function.

Yes but i wouldn't call it smart, its intelligence is as fleeting as new software.
They won't look very smart in 2 years, you'll need a new one if you want to have a 'smart watch'

Although this might, (very likely) be correct, it's actually not relevant to the argument.
Longevity, obsolescence, or lasting/fleeting fashionability (???), doesn't make them any less a watch.

Otherwise the many hundreds of millions of cheap quartz fashion watches would also fail the test as would any watch with obsolete or outdated technology. (Did I hear someone say mechanical, hand wind, or automatic, or even standard quartz?)

Re: Is a Smartwatch Really a Watch?

A SMART watch has the ability to be updated with new information.

Even a mechanical watch that has more complications can not ever be updated, its mechanical functions are fixed. Similar to early quartz watches as displayed above, they had no possible function to connect and update themselves!
