Android smart watch recommendation needed for my wife

    Hi there,

My wife wants a smart watch to keep track of incoming phone calls

    Any suggestions?

She likes the look of apple watch and she is not very tech savvy

What do you mean by "keep track of"? Are you looking for a watch that will log call history?

If she just wants a bluetooth notifier / wrist buzzer for calls and text Amazfit Bip or Pace are good choices. They accept standard 20 and 22mm straps, so you can get colored sport straps that replicate the Apple / Nike look and feel. Although the Pace doesn't look like an apple watch at all.

Garmin, maybe? Or Fitbit? Even Garmin's little Vivosmart band can notify her of texts and calls. Fitbit's bands can do it, too -- my wife's Charge HR can grab her attention.

I mention these because Garmin and Fitbit seem like big enough companies that they'll last for a good while. Fossil is a big name, but they sold their smartwatch tech to Google last month, so who knows what's going to happen. I also like the idea of analog-only "hybrid" smartwatches from Skagen or Kronaby, but their smartwatch capabilities are awfully limited by comparison to Apple, Garmin, Fitbit, etc.

I would avoid that watch. Its an older model, it uses Android Wear so you will need to manage an OS update to WearOS right out of the box. In general its hit / miss which older models get the update and which ones do not.

Android Wear should be avoided. It was a nightmare. WearOS is better, but still kind of buggy, laggy and OS updates are not exactly smooth sailing. Not really an ideal choice for the non-tech minded.

I have a Fossil gen4 explorist (WearOS)... I like it but do not recommend it openly. IMHO its really only for those users who are tech-savy, with the capabilities to go out and research for support.

melb, in case you missed it, read kramer5150's post about his recent experiences with WearOS:

Stuff like this matters because it's the software that'll make or break your opinion of your smartwatch.

That one would be a big NO-NO for me for the simple reason of it being square. I know it's purely my hangup, but I feel watches should be round.
Does your wife walk/run/cycle in all weather conditions or is it just for in the home/work environment? That would dictate whether you need to select on water-resistance.
My wife is something of a technophobe, but she has me to help out with stuff so she still leads a full and rewarding life with some technology, but she doesn't want a smartwatch.
Any smartwatch you get will receive updates from time to time. That's no big deal as long as you set it to wait until you give it the go ahead to install.
Do you wear a smartwatch yourself? I persuaded my wife to use the same smartphone I use just to avoid having to be conversant with more styles than necessary.
