Safety Recall of all Basis Peak watches

    August 3, 2016

Safety Recall of all Basis Peak watches

"On June 13 we shared reports of overheating in Basis Peak watches,
and we recommended that you stop wearing your Basis Peak watch right
away. We had hoped to update the software on your watch to address
the problem. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we aren't able to
develop such a solution without completely compromising the shell ip."

    Basis is owned by Intel.

How interesting. Their memo from mid-June said they were trying to update the software so the watch would shut down if it detected overheating. I wonder why it would overheat in the first place.

"Is this recall voluntary? No." They really want these things off the street. The data services will be shut down at the end of the year, too.

    Apparently it's a small fraction...0.2%.

To me that suggests production QA problems, and it's cheaper to write off the entire business than to deal with the settlements and bad PR. I'll also bet that this was decided at a level above Basis itself.

I've owned a Basis since the very first one, the B1, came out what seems like ages ago. I'll really miss my Peak.

I appreciate that they are being responsive and erring on the side of caution but it's sad that it has come to this.

People invested a lot of effort to design, produce, and market the product
only to have the entire project flushed. I agree. It is sad.
