Lightbulb What do you think about a smarwatch/smartphone hybrid?

I just read about this in a news article: https://www.trendhunter.com/trends/h...ell-smartwatch

There is a Shell Smartwatch which basically transforms a smartwatch into a smartphone. It's quite an interesting idea but was wondering what do you guys think?

Execution aside (I mean, that thing is HUGE)...

It's really hard to call something with such a small screen a "fully functional smartphone".

It's also adding mechanical complexity where it isn't needed. I can see how it'd be nice to have a pop-out earpiece for more privacy during calls, but that's the only benefit it offers. There's no improvement when reading emails, sending texts, checking the weather, or other already-common smartwatch tricks.

I'm not sure how it can be made comfortably smaller and lighter without compromising the earpiece capability. It's showing a built-in kinetic charger, which sounds cool, but again, that's an additional cost in mechanical complexity and overall weight.

Interesting, but not feasible. Technology can only fool physics only so much; they'll need to make some amazing advances in materials for the pop-out earpiece and kinetic charger if they expect to make it in a wearable size. Today, however, it looks pretty impossible.

I used to own a Samsung Gear S3 and I was able to call with it with ease. The sound was great.
Now Apple provide and electronic SIM card on its watches.
Smart watch are very close to be wrist téléphones.
Even SMS/messenger can be handle with Siri.
I have walked away from Samsung Gear S3 because it was too much phone oriented and not enough watch and time keeping oriented.

I like the concept, it wont be affordable though. Once the battery dies after ~20 months its useless. Just like any other smartwatch, they need to find a way to make the battery replaceable.

Heres my solution... LOL!! OK , OK its not really a "watch". Its an old iphone 5C that I wear on a jogging arm band as a field GPS tracker for hiking and backpacking. Theres no cell activation, although I guess I could pop in a new SIM and use it this way. Cool thing about the older iphone 5 models is its super easy (and cheap) to replace the battery every 18 months. They also have pretty good GPS radios, that are GLONASS compatible too. I can't get it wet though, so thats a bummer.

I feel like I’m the only one who paid attention to the video.

I watched most of it... cool concept. but then again everything looks good in manufacturer promo vids. When it comes to new products, and particularly crowd funding I have learned not to buy into marketing hype... shrug.

To a certain extent (IMHO) smart watches are a $$$, complex engineering solution to problems that don't exist. So their marketeers have to convince us with various forms of hype.
