Confused When Smart Watches Ainít so Smart

Fossil today released a new version of their Fossil Q app for their range of hybrid smart watches. Itís mostly just a pointless redesign of the UI, which actually removes quite a few features. Butóget thisóthey removed the ability to turn off notifications.

You could be forgiven for thinking thatís not that big of a deal until you come to realise that one of the main features of the watch is that itís a sleep tracker! How are you supposed to sleep with your wrist buzzing all night? Nice one, Fossil. I wonder how much they paid for that update.

The only smart watch I would even remotely consider is the Apple Watch.

Agreed. I’ve had them all, and one by one got rid of them. Except the Apple Watch. I can’t see myself going without that. In fact, I just upgraded to the series 3. Love it.

Now, this Fossil... Thats another story.

My Son loves his. He is an Apple Developer, but has not had time to do any AW apps yet, still in school.

I used to be a full-time developer myself. I really should get around to looking at some Apple Watch development myself.

It seems it’s highly fashionable to bash Apple, and especially the Apple Watch, but I have more experience with smart watches than I do with mechanicals. Nothing, in my experience, comes close for all-round, well thought-out functionality and ease-of-use. They certainly would not let something like this Fossil gaff out of the door!

I just got Alpina Seastrong SW and have no issues yet. Have tried Fossil before, but used to be a hit or miss even with BT connectivity.

Yes. The Bluetooth can be iffy as well. All in all, this Fossil wasn’t my best purchase. I’d sell it if I thought I could. The watch does what it’s supposd to do, and even looks nice (objectively), but if watch companies are getting into the smart/hybrid world, they can make or break it with software. They’re breaking it.

I havent heard of the Alpina. I’m going to do some searching now.
