ETA & Co. VS in-house caliber : which one is *really* better ?

    Morning folks,

Our MB friend George raised a good point in a previous topic : the fact that he doesn't really care about the difference, in a MB watch, about an in-house / ETA caliber.

Some purists may be offended. I was. There's no such thing as a manufactured caliber. Wait. Really ?

The fact is that ETA, Valjoux, Sellita & others are industrial movements. Which are, by definition, way more reliable than most in-house calibers, due to the fact that they have been produced by millions and enhanced thousand of times. They barely have no default.

In which way they should be less prestigious than manufacture movement ?

    What's your position here ?

Interesting topic. For mine it is not always that an in-house movement is objectively *better* than an ETA, it is that an in-house movement is more exclusive than an ETA. I like each of my watches to have a personality beyond the way it looks so having more than one watch with the same "heart" & the exact same way of keeping time is not desirable to me.

In-house movement snobs due a quick 180 when they see their first bill for service and or repair, reliability and ease
of repair or service is #1.

That's already an answer of a real connoisseur !
So I think you always prefer to see your movement through a saphir case back as well ?
