I’m new to these forums and to watch collecting in general and I wanted advice/help on what to do with my watch. This Montblanc Star was given to me by my father, which he got 17 years ago as a dress watch. He wore it to his wedding and a couple of times after, but then lost it. About a year and a half ago we went looking through my grandma’s apartment and found it untouched in a sock. He gave it to me because I was absolutely infatuated by watches and loved automatic movements. I never wore it because I was 14 at the time, but now for my 16th birthday, I wanted to clean it up with a new band and consider polishing the casing instead of asking for a new watch. This is my only watch so I wanted something I could casually wear with jeans.
This watch is gold plated and I’ve researched about polishing and re-plating, but couldn’t find a place for it. I went to Tourneau (people acted like they were superior to me), they didn’t know what they were talking about. Plus, they told me it would be 200 dollars just to polish and that it didn’t need to be re-plated? Not really sure if that’s correct but from my understanding it’s not. Does anyone know of a place to polish/ re-plate and what is your opinion on the idea? I don’t think the surface scratches are a big deal by any means, but wanted to get rid of them and see if this option was even worth it. Any advice would be appreciated. Finally, I would like to get opinions on putting a brown strap on the watch to dress it down a little bit.
