    Montblanc Star 7001- Advice

    Hello everyone,
I’m new to these forums and to watch collecting in general and I wanted advice/help on what to do with my watch. This Montblanc Star was given to me by my father, which he got 17 years ago as a dress watch. He wore it to his wedding and a couple of times after, but then lost it. About a year and a half ago we went looking through my grandma’s apartment and found it untouched in a sock. He gave it to me because I was absolutely infatuated by watches and loved automatic movements. I never wore it because I was 14 at the time, but now for my 16th birthday, I wanted to clean it up with a new band and consider polishing the casing instead of asking for a new watch. This is my only watch so I wanted something I could casually wear with jeans.

This watch is gold plated and I’ve researched about polishing and re-plating, but couldn’t find a place for it. I went to Tourneau (people acted like they were superior to me), they didn’t know what they were talking about. Plus, they told me it would be 200 dollars just to polish and that it didn’t need to be re-plated? Not really sure if that’s correct but from my understanding it’s not. Does anyone know of a place to polish/ re-plate and what is your opinion on the idea? I don’t think the surface scratches are a big deal by any means, but wanted to get rid of them and see if this option was even worth it. Any advice would be appreciated. Finally, I would like to get opinions on putting a brown strap on the watch to dress it down a little bit.

    Thanks

Hello Rocket, and thanks for joining the forum !

This is a great piece you have here, and a chance you got it in a good condition.

First thing you have to know is that, basically, polishing a piece consists of remonving some quantities of matter. So yes, in the end, your piece will be as shiny as it used to be, but because the finishing has been leveled at the level of the scratches, precisely. Consequence : your case will be like new, but with less matter, it will also be...more fragile to scratches.

In fact, a re-polishing is perfect for a piece that you will keep for exceptional occasions, keeping it away from day-to-day accidents and scratches. In your case, that would be amazing for a few days, but if you consider a daily use of the watch, you'd get even more scratches than the ones you have here, in a short period of time.

Moreover, as long as your watch is golden, and not in gold, a re-polish will affect the brightness of the golden finishing.

Last but not least, a watch lives. It has an history, and small scratches are like small scars that life & your dad left on it. I think you should keep it that way. It's part of your father's life, it's now yours, don't delete that, it's its soul.

For the strap : no opinion here on the aesthetics side, it's all personal, but one advice -> if you consider a day to dat use of the watch, keep in mind that a new leather strap won't be friend with water... Just saying. In any case, keep the old, we never know :)

    Any time,

    Olivier

Know it is a bit too late but maybe it coud help.

For the watch strap, I have the ( little bit cheaper version ) 7003, was also with a black strap, but bought a brown strap for it.
Uploaded a couple of pics so you see how it would turn out.

I think a brown leather strap fits a golden watch very well when you wear it.
